Ash Family

Descendants of Wilhelm (William) Esch

Generation One

1Wilhelm (William)1 Esch; born circa 1665 at prob Germany.

Wilhelm is identified through the marriage records of his son, Joahnn Mathias (Theis) Esch. In that record, Wilhelm Esch is said to be of "Eppenroth, Schaumburg. Paul Schmidt, German researcher, in March 2, 2000 report, believed that "Eppenroth may have referred to Eppenrod, Unterlahnkreiss, Hessen-Nassau, as that village was not too far from Blessenbach. If Wilhelm's son was born in the 1670s or early 1680s, his christening should have appeard in Eppenrod records. Records were searched from 1651-85, but no Esch entries at all were noted. Wilhelm presumably was still alive when his son married in 1702; a search of Eppenrod burials were searched from 1702-60, but no Esch surname was seen.

Note: Most of the earlier generation of Esch/Ash came from research performed on behalf of Ash researchers by Paul Schmidt, German researcher, in March 2, 2000 at Salt Lake City.

The only known child of Wilhelm (William)1 Esch and an unknown spouse was:

Generation Two

2Johan Mathias (Theis)2 Esch (Wilhelm (William)1); born at Eppenrod, Preussen, GER; Marriage: 25 Dec 1701 Blessenbach, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen, Germany; Johann Theis Esch born in Eppenroth[?] in the Principality of Schaumburg, legitimate son of Wilhelm Esch, and Maria Juliana Zimmer(in), legitmate daughter of the late Hans Georg Zimmer of Blessenbach, married after three proclamations. The place mentioned doesn't exist, but there is an Eppenrod not too far from Blessenbach, which could have been part of Schaumburg at one time, so that is probably what was meant; married Maria Juliana Zimmer, daughter of Georg Zimmer, 25 Dec 1701 at Blessenbach, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen, GER; Marriage record reads "Johann Theis Esch born in Eppenroth (?) in the Principality of Schaumburg, legitimate son of Wilhelm Esch and Maria Juliana Zimmer(in), legitimate daughter of the late Hans Georg Zimmer of Blessenbach, married after three proclamations." The place mentioned doesn't exist, but there is an Eppenrod not too far from Blessenbach, which could have been part of Schaumburg at one time, so this is probably what was meant. The first marriage proclamation was made December 25, 1701. (Proclamations were read in weeks prior to a marriage in order that anyone who knew of an impediment to uniting

them might come forward.) The actural marriage record was recorded January 10, 1702.

Mr. Schmidt, researcher, stated it is possible that the Esch family was Catholic, and that Johann Mathias Esch only married a Protestant woman, though no mention of this was made in his marriage. Eppenrod belongs to the Catholic Parish of Nentershausen, Kreis Westerburg, but unfortunately, the register of that place only began in 1681, presumably after Johann Mathis would have been born. A search of records of another village in the area, Egenroth, did not uncover the birth of Johann Mathias Esch. (Evangelisch Kirche Egenroth (Unterlahnkreis), Kirchenbuch, 1614-1875, FHL Film No. 1270387);

1 died between 1742 and 1764 at Blessenbach, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen, GER; The Blessenbach register for the years 1742-1764 is missing, and it is assumed that his death would be found in it.

Maria Juliana Zimmer died on 23 Apr 1734 at Blessenbach, GER. She was buried on 25 Apr 1734. Maria Zimmer's christening was not found in the Blessenbach parish, but there were two marriages for a man named Hans Geor Zimmer, as well as children born to his first wife. The second wife, Anna Sibilla Weis(?), by whom Maria Julianna probably would have been born, was from a place which looked like "Munsen", but may have been Munster. The baptisms of that parish were searched from 1681-1707 for children born to Hans Geor Zimmer, but none were found.

The two known children of Johan Mathias (Theis)2 Esch and Maria Juliana Zimmer were as follows:

Generation Three

3Johann Heinrick Matthias3 Esch II (Johan Mathias (Theis)2, Wilhelm (William)1); born 13 Feb 1703 at Runkel, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen, GER; born 3:00 p.m. in Hofen;2 married Anna Maria Kroh, daughter of Johan Wilhelm Kroh, 5 Nov 1726 at Blessenbach, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen, GER; Groom: Johan Henrich, legitmate son of Theis [Mathias] Esch(en), musketeer and Bride: Anna Maria, legitimate daughter of Johan Wilhelm Kroh(en) of here; Marriage record of Johan Henrich Esch & Anna Maria Kroh Evangelische Kirche Blessenbach (Oberlahnkreis) Kirchenbuch, 1655-1900, 5 Nov 1726 #103 SLC 1476658;3 died 15 Nov 1782 at Blessenbach, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen, GER, at age 79; Died between 1:00 and 2:00am, buried 17 November. Widower in Blessenbach, age 80 years, less 3 months, married for 25 years, less 1 month and 5 days, widower for 31 years, 1 month and 21 days; Death Record of Johann Henrich Esch Evangelische Kirche Blessenbach (Oberlahnkreis) Kirchenbuch, 1655-1900, 15 Nov 1782 SLC 1476658.

4 Anna Maria Kroh died on 24 Sep 1751 at Blessenbach, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen, GER; The Blessenbach register for the years 1742-1764 is missing, and it is assumed that her death would be recorded in it. The date is estimated as her husband's death record gives amount of time he's been widowed.

5 The seven known children of Johann Heinrick Matthias3 Esch II and Anna Maria Kroh were as follows:

Generation Four

11Johann Adam4 Esch (Johann Heinrick Matthias3, Johan Mathias (Theis)2, Wilhelm (William)1); born 1 Mar 1744 at Germany; birth taken from tombstone - 75yrs-2mns-0dys;16,17,18,19 married Maria Catherine Yost, daughter of Johann Pieter Yosh, 21 Mar 1770 at Blessenbach, Germany; Arvil Ash states that they were married a year or two before their immigration to America, on which there eldest son was born;20,21,22,23 died 1 May 1819 at Gregory's Run, Harrison Co., WV, at age 75;24,25,26 buried at Ash Cemetery, Gregory's Run, Harrison Co., WV; Stone & Inscription by Harold Davisson: He was a revolutionary soldier born in 1744. He came from Holland in 1770. A son, Christopher was born during this voyage.27,28,29

He was also known as Adam Ash (he is known as Adam Ash in the Harrison County area. Below are some comments of Kathryn (Rhinehart) Bassett on her findings, which has very good proof of Adam Ash's name was Johann Adam Esch:

Years ago I started out with "The Family Tradition", which is the usual chestnut about 'three brothers", and as usual, it has true elements, but not completely accurate. First are some examples of the "tradition", followed by the major clue that led me to the 1770 German marriage record of Adam Ash and Catharine Yost (Johann Adam Esch and Maria Catharina Jost).

Tradition

In The Purkey Family and the Delaney Family by Sandra L. Delaney (Allen Co., Fort Wayne, IN, Library) a genealogy of Adam Ash is described:

"Henry Ash was the brother of Adam Ash. They came to the United States along with a third brother, John, in about 1770. Henry first settled with his brothers in Chester County, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. He patented land with his brother, Adam, in Bethel Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, in 1789. He served during the Revolutionary War in the Chester County militia and enlisted in the Bedford County militia in 1781. In 1778, he took the Patriots' Oath of Fidelity and Support in Washington County, Maryland. Apparently, he ultimately settled in Washington County. Henry married Catherine ??, probably prior to his mmigration to the United States. They had five children: Abraham, died ca. 1833 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Married Catherine ??. Jacob; David;

Henry, born ca. 1760 in Germany; died in 1849 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Married Barbara Miller (ca. 1765-1849) in ca. 1784; John, born February 8, 1775, died ca. 1830 in Washington County, Maryland. Married Mary ??."

continuing..."Adam Ash was born in Germany in March 1744. He is said to have been of English (Scotch-Irish) ancestry on his father's side and German on his mother's side. He and his wife, Catherine Yost, sailed from Amsterdam, Holland, to settle in the United States about 1770. Adam married Catherine in Germany in ca. 1768, before their immigration. Catherine was born in Germany in 1749. Adam was accompanied to America by his two brothers, John and Henry, and their families. The passage took about six weeks, and they encountered many storms which drove the ship back toward Holland. Adam's and Catherine's first child Christopher, was born on the voyage over. The three brothers settled first in Chester County, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. While living in the state, Adam served as an American soldier in the Revolutionary War. He served as a private in Captain Parker's company, 2nd Battalion, of the Chester County militia from August 5, 1776 to September 10, 1776. He then moved westward to Bedford County. A land warrant was issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 200 acres in Bethel Township, Bedford County, on November 4, 1789 to Henry and Adam Ash. In return, the brothers agreed to pay the state ten pounds per 100 acres "in Gold, Silver, Paper Money of this State, or certificates." The land, situated on both sides of Tonoloway Creek, was surveyed April 30, 1795 for 286 acres 107 perches. This particular parcel of land was later given to Henry Ash, Jr., by his father, Henry (brother of Adam), and is mentioned in Henry's will, dated January 6, 1801 in Washington County, Maryland."

Tradition (another version)

The George Morris Family of Ten Mile, With Genealogical Charts For Other Affiliated Families, A Story of The Pioneer Families of The Ten Mile Valley In Harrison

County West Virginia by Ollie B Morris and Eva Ruth Morris copyright 1967, page 294 says:

"Three Ash brothers named John, Adam and Henry were of Scotch-Irish nationality, but in their younger days had gone to Holland where they seem to have married and lived for awhile. Several years before the Revolutionary War these brothers with their families embarked for America sailing from Amsterdam, Holland. After a six-weeks voyage they arrived and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia."

The Clue

I have known about Henry's existence because I have land transactions involving both Adam and Henry, but had never made an in-depth study of his family. In June 1999 I found the web site of Mary (Lowe) Ash: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/s/h/Mary-H-Ash/GENE10-00

where she gave the this following source which proved to be the missing link.

The Pennsylvanische Geschichts-Schreiber newspaper, published by Christopher Sauer, mentions in an article the following advertisement:

"April 1,1755. Johann Wilhelm Esch, from Runckelischen Land, arrived in America a year and a half ago. His brother Henrich arrived last autumn, and is serving with Georg Schmitt, opposite the printer, in Germantown. He seeks his brother."

The author of More Palatine Families comments "The origins of the family, then, probably would be at or near 6251 Runckel, home of several 1709er emigrants. As Henrich Esch of Pennsylvania had been looking for his brother for over six months, there is the strong possibility that Johann Wilhelm Esch may have settled in another colony. The Red Hook Lutheran Church book in Dutchess Co., N.Y., notes that a John Wilhelmus Esch joined the church there June 5, 1757. Wilhelm Esch and his wife Elisabetha Dopp are then found in other churches in the Hudson Valley, such as the New Hackensack Reformed, Schaghticok Reformed, and Poughkeepsie Reformed Churches.

"'Heinrich Esch' arrived October 21, 1754 on the ship Friendship, Charles Ross, Captain. The ship sailed from Amsterdam, with the last port being Gosport, England. The inhabitants of the ship were from Franconia and Hesse, and there were 7 Roman Catholics." The ship landed in Philadelphia.

Why these men were thought to be of "English (Scotch-Irish)" ancestry is unknown because Esch is a German name, they were associated with Germans traditons and churches, and Adam wrote one deed in German. The "Runckelischen Land" clue was invaluable since it was what led to the Runkel church records where the marriage of Adam and Catharine was found. (By the way, though there is proof that John and Henry are bothers, and Adam is

definitely a relative of Henry's because of later transactions involving both of them, so far there is nothing to prove what that relationship is. It is just as likely to be an uncles/nephew relationship as that of a much younger brother. Once we find baptismal records the exact relationship should be clarified).

The Proof

I had already been convinced in my own mind that Adam Ash and immigrant Johann Adam Esch were the same person. Now with this clue of Runckelischen Land, it was time to get out a good German map. I found out from others that "...ischen Land" is a common German place name ending and that I should look for Runkel. I found one near Limberg. Now it was time to see what Runkel records were available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City UT. I was lucky, since there isn't much, that what was available was just what I needed.

After consulting with the volunteers on the "International Floor" of the library, I was armed with a sample of what the name Esch would look like in old German script. I was actually looking for baptismal records to prove or disprove that Adam was a brother to Henry and John William (to use the Americanization of their names) but had no success. Then I decided I would try the marriage record for the one date I knew, that of Adam and Catharine. I found an entry in

the right month where I could clearly make out Johann Adam with a last name that looked like my sample, and Maria Catharina. I hadn't thought to ask what what Yost looked like but knew that it would be a J not a Y. So back I went to the volunteers for a translation which turned out to be:

Johann Adam Esch of Blessenbach, shoemaker master, the son of Johann Heinrick Esch from here, legitimate son, and Maria Catharina, daughter of John Pieter Jost from here, legitimate daughter Proc (Banns) 25 Febr. Cop (married) 21 Mar in this year.

Signatures

The first known signature for Adam Ash is the passenger list from the Brig Morton Star, (George Demster, Master), which arrived 24 Dec 1772 from Rotterdam, last from Cowes. On list is Johann Adam Esch. There is an actual signature in Pennsylvania German Pioneers (by Straussberger, SLC 974.811 W3s), 3rd volume which is the facsimile signatures volume In Harrison County WV, are three more documents of concern to our proof that Adam was German.

In marriage book 2 page 113 (SLC film 847274) there is a bond dated 6 Aug 1805 for Adam & Catharine's daughter Eve Ash. Adam signed that bond Adam Esch in German.

In deed book 6 page 166 dated 21 Jul 1806, Adam also wrote his name in German, but unfortunately the originals of the early deed books were transcribed into typescript and then destroyed. That is a shame because it might have given us yet another original signature to compare with a passenger list signature. But the point here is that underneath where the "signature" of Adam Ash is typed is the phrase "Wrote in Duch." Duch would be the mis-spelling of Deutch which

means German.

In marriage book 2 page 343 (SLC film 847274) there is a bond dated 7 Feb 1810 for Adam & Catharine's daughter Mary Ash. Adam signed that bond Adam Esch in German as well. On that one, someone wrote underneath his signature "Adam Ash in English."

30 He immigrated on 24 Dec 1772 to Chester/Bedford Co., PA; Some records indicate Adam immigrated with brothers Henry and John. (not yet proven)

They came on the "Morton Star" from Rotterdam, last from Cowes.31,32 He and Maria Catherine Yost appeared on the census of 1790 at Bedford Co., PA; Census states that there were five free white males under age 16, and six free females.33 He resided in 1793 at Gregory's Run, Sardis District, Harrison Co., WV; "The first cabin in Saris District, Harrison County, was built by William Johnson. Sometime in 1789, Johnson had gone some distance from home to get salt and when he returned he found his wife and the four children missing, the livestock scattered, and the cabin and contents with in shambles. The bodies of the children were found some distance away, but Mrs. Johnson was never heard of again. This is the last record of an Indian raid in this section. The second settlement in this district was made on Gregory's Run about 1793, by Adam Ash, and the first child born here was probably Christopher Ash, son of Adam and Catherine Ash." (Taken from Hardesty's "Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia with Maps and Histories of Marion and Harrision Counties", published in 1883.34 Final settlement of the estate of he 9 Feb 1822 Harrison Co., WV; all the children of Adam and Catherine (Yost) Ash in this document.35

He was also known as Christian. He and Lovina Swiger resided at Center Point, Doddridge Co., WV.53 Christopher was interest in hunting and that perhaps furnished the motivation for the move into Doddridge County where wild game was still plentiful. He and his brother-in-law, Christopher Swiger hunted often together. While hunting with Christopher Swiger, Christopher Ash spied a very large poplar tree in which there was a large hole about 30 feet from its base. He remarked to Mr. Swiger that he believed there were coons in that tree. There was a tall sapling standing near the poplar tree, the top of which reached above or up to the supposed coon's den. They felled this sapling against the larger tree, and Mr. Ash climbed to the large hole. No sooner had he climbed to the large hole and looked in to survey the hollow of the tree, than an old she bear, being as anxious to see out as he was to see in, put her head out, striking his, realizing the perilousness of his position, he started to descend, crying in broken english to Mr. Swiger who had already taken aim at the bear, "Crass, No Shoot!" About 1800 the two Christophers were hunting in the section now known as Sardis in Harrison County. The two removed from Harrison County and settled in Doddridge County, where many of the descendants still live today. The valley where the Ash family lived is still called "Ash Hollow". It is said that Christopher was a surveyor and accumulated about 20,000 acres of land, some of which was around Center Point and Ashley. In fact Ashley was named for Christopher Ash.54

Ash accounts on page 15 is in error, when he states that John died in 1835. He is found in the 1850, and 1860 Tyler County Census, being seventy-five years old in 1860. His wife, Anna is listed in the 1870 Census as a widow.73,74,75
