Reference Sep 1849 Lewisham X 345.18 In 1851 Timothy William Potter Taylder produced a book entitled The American Mahomet.19 He was listed as a visitor in the household of Charles Symmonds in the 1851 census at Bow Street, Guisbro, Yorkshire. Timothy William Potter Taylder was recorded as aged 33 born in Penryn Cornwall married, and with an occupation of Independent Minister.4 He was a Clerk on 18 March 1854.17 In 1855 Timothy William Potter Taylder produced a book entitled The Mormons Own Book.19 On 9 June 1856 the following item appeared in The Times.
It was reported that TWP Taylder was appearing at the Insolvent Debtors Court, Portugal Street for Protection.20 In 1857 Timothy William Potter Taylder produced a book entitled 20 Reasons for Rejecting Mormonism.19 He was a Minister between 7 October 1860 and 1 November 1866 at Zion Congregational Chapel, Highworth, Wiltshire.15,12
On 7th October 1860 Mr TWP Taylder commenced his ministry of the Zion Chapel, Highworth Wiltshire. At first things seemed to go well. The congregation increased and then number of members increased. The Sunday School seemed to be flourishing.
The first indication of a problem (although not obvious at the time) was at the end of October 1861 when Mr Charles Higgs resigned from the Zion Chapel. In October 1863 there was a report in the Swindon Advertiser of an anniversary service and the paper implied that Mr Taylder's ministry was successful and profitable. but in November there was a report of a service with a guest speaker which was held in the British School Room. As a result of this Mr Taylder wrote a letter to the newspaper (published 7th December 1863) objecting to the fact that the "Association" was sympathetic to the group holding meetings in the School Room. This was followed by an anonymous letter to the newspaper which, it later transpired was written by Mr Charles Higgs. there then followed several letters from both sides, with several accusations being made.
Not far from the Zion Chapel was the School Room with a cemetery behind. During the week this was used as a British School (a nonconformist school) and on Sundays for the Sunday School. There was a set of Trustees for the Chapel, a set of Trustees for the School Room and a set of Trustees for some Endowments. The Endowments were to supply income for the minister.
From the war of words in the Swindon Advertiser it appear that a group of people had fallen out from the Zion congregation and by July 1863 began to hold Sunday services in the School Room. Mr Higgs favoured the School Room group and Mr Taylder did not but the people using the School Room had some support from the Trustees of the School Room and had no intention of moving elsewhere. Mr Higgs claimed that the separation was due to some sin Mr Tayler had committed of which he was fully aware. A fact denied by Mr Taylder. The letters continued until 25th January 1864 during which Mr Higgs referred to a letter from Jemima Taylder suggesting she also had fallen out with her brother.
On 11th July 1866 a court case commenced at Swindon County Court with Mr Taylder as the Plaintiff and the Defendants the Trustees of the Endowments of the Chapel. Mr Taylder defended himself and sought to remove the Trustees firstly becasue the repairs made to the endowment proerty had been unnecessary and exorbitant and secondly because one of the Trustees (Mr Pedley, a builder) had been chiefly employed in doing such repairs and had supplied the materials.
The defendants Mr John Smith and Mr William Pedley were represented by Mr Kinneir, a well known local person.
Two consituent parts of the Endowments were left by Mr Angell and Mr Saunders. During 3 years the total income of Mr Angells charity was £82. - 10s and the expenditure was £60- 11s- 5d thus leaving £22- 7s- 7d for the minister. From Mr Saunders charity, which should have produced a similar income, the minister had received nothing since 29th September 1865. These figures were not refuted.
Witnesses were called who were workmen who carried out the repairs and all stated that the repairs had been necessary and that there was no extravagance or overcharging. It was obvious however that Mr Pedley had organised all the work subcontracting most of it and had supplied much of the materials.
Mr Kinneir turned the case around and endeavoured to show that Mr Taylder was not fit to be Minister of Zion Chapel. Mr Taylder was forced to admit that his present number of communicants was very low.He also admitted that he had not served anywhere before coming to Highworth except 6 months in 1850 or 1851 with the Home Missionary Society.
Mr Kinneir then attempted to get Mr Taylder to admit he had been drunk but failed. Mr Taylder did however admit to no longer being teetotal and admitted to taking a glass of ale occasionally when he had the money to pay for it.
Mr Kinneir also forced Mr Taylder to admit to borrowing 2 lots of money and failing to repay the loans.
The case was adjourned so the judge, Mr C F D Caillard, could examine the documents and he regretted that Mr Taylder did not have the benefit of a legal advisor.
After 2 further adjournments the case returned to court on 29th September 1866. Mr Taylder was now represented by Mr Smith from Melksham, the Trustees of the Endowments by Mr Kinneir and also a Mr Milward attended who represented the Trustees of the Chapel. After a short time the judge suggested a private interview with the parties, a meeting which took 3 hours during which a settlement was agreed.
The Trustees agreed to pay Mr Taylder £150 who in turn would resign the office of minister from the 1st November 1866 and would leave the Chapel house by 25th December.
between 7 October 1860 and 1 November 1866.12 He was listed as the head of the household in the 1861 census at Chapel House High Street, Highworth, Wiltshire, with Jemima Potter Taylder, Emma Matilda Taylder and William Bampton Taylder.5 He married Elizabeth Edgington, daughter of Thomas Edgington and Elizabeth (?), at Zion Congregational Chapel in Highworth, Wiltshire, on 15 August 1861.16,15,17 The marriage of Timothy William Potter Taylder and Elizabeth Edgington was registered at Highworth Registration District, Wiltshire, in the quarter ending September 1861. Death of the Rev T. W. P. Taylder Veteran Temperance Reformer
We regret to record the death of the Rev Timothy William Potter Taylder which took place with painful suddenness at the residence of his son-in-law Mr J Robson, 37 Tenth Avenue, Heaton, on Sunday night at the ripe age of 85 years. Born at Penryn, Cornwall on March 2 1818, he associated himself early in life with religious, philanthropic and temperance work. On November 5 1843, he was ordained as a probationary minister at the Hackney Road Wesleyan Chapel, London and then went out to Jamaica, where he was engaged in work of the mission field for a few years. After returning to England he became pastor of the Highworth Congregational Church, Wiltshire and it was here he really commenced and ended his ministerial life at home. The health of his wife was precarious and he resigned the ministry of that church and came North, and has resided in this district ever since. Here he has held nearly every office in the District Lodge of Good Templars. Five years ago he was chaplain to the Grand Lodge. His interest in the temperance movement never showed any abatement from first to last, and only half an hour before his death he penned a letter to Mr Guy Hayler, secretary of the North of England Temperance League, with whom, as a leading temperance advocate in the North, he was on intimate terms.
Timothy's obituary was in Evening Chronicle, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, on 15 April 1903.

Timothy's obituary was in The Good Templar's Watchword on 25 April 1903.2
