MARGARET : From Latin MARGARITA, derived from Greek meaning pearl. A 4th Century St Margaret was Martyred at Antioch. St Margaret of Scotland was the queen of King Malcom III in the 11th century and she brought the name to prominence there. It was also popular in England and has remained so throughout the English-speaking world, though its frequency in this form has declined in recent years, It has been the name of queens of several countries, including England, Scotland, Denmark and France.
