Jefferson Hunt figured prominently in the settlement of the American West. As captain of Company A of the Mormon Battalion, he and his sons traversed the deserts of the southwest. Upon being mustered out, at Fort Moore in Los Angeles, he made his way to Sutter's Mill and then to Salt Lake City. He acted as guide for numerous groups from Utah to Southern California. He helped settle Provo, Utah, San Bernardino, California, and Huntsville, Utah. He was a California state representative from San Bernardino, in which role he sponsored legislation forming San Bernardino County. He was twice a member of Utah's territorial legislature.
