1. Grief1 Whittington was born in Albermarle Parish, VA 1762.
He married three times. He married Susanna Cox. He married Thruly Smith in SC, 1790. He married Winnie Whittington in Amite Co, MS, 3/15/1816. Winnie was born in Georgia 1784. Winnie was the daughter of Cornelius Whittington and Rebecca Gilliam.
Grief served in the military 1778. Grief entered service in 1778 under Capt. Thomas Lloyd and served with Lewis L. Harper under Col. Hick's 5th regiment, South Carolina. He also served under Gen. Nathaniel Greene, and after he married named a son Green. On October 1, 1887, Grief was granted 200 acres of land for fighting in the Revolution. The land was near Georgetown, South Carolina, overlooking the Pee Dee River.
