Stories, Articles and Biographical
Harry met Velma when she was living in Tyler only a half block away. One day Velma was walking down the street while Harry was out washing his car. He looked up and saw a good-looking woman and had to figure out a way to meet her. In order to get her attention, he "accidentally" sprayed her with the water hose. Only after they were married would he admit that it wasn't really an accident.

Harry attended Texas Christian University on a football scholarship, lettering in football, baseball, basketball and track. He was also offered football scholarships from Texas A&M and West Point. Harry was unable to attend West Point since he was blind in his right eye and had been since an accident while playing at around age 5. Harry accepted a scholarship to attend Texas A&M but his mother, a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Tyler, Texas, wanted him to attend TCU in Fort Worth.

Since the train went through Fort Worth on its way to College Station, Harry agreed to visit TCU. Between trains, Harry went to the Coach's office to try and obtain an athletic scholarship. The Coach told him that he would have to try out to get a scholarship to TCU. Harry responded with "That's okay. I'm between trains and don't have time. I'm on my way to A&M where I have a football scholarship. I'm only here because my mother wanted me to go to TCU and I promised her I would try since the train came through Fort Worth." The coach responded with "You've got a scholarship. If you are good enough to play at A&M, you're good enough to play at TCU.”464

Stories, Articles and Biographical
Velma was working in Dallas when she married the first time. We do not know where she married him? He was a good looking blonde but wasn't worth a flip as told to her son Jerry. They were married only six months with no issue.

Velma loved her family and all children. She even owned a daycare center for at least ten years where she was mother to many children, many of which were from broken homes. She was so loved by all of these children that they continued to keep in touch with her even after they were married and had their own families. Many Christmases found these children back to visit.

After retirement from Mother Frances Hospital, she took up quilting with her first cousin Mattie Bott. Together they became avid quilters, starting the quilters group at Antioch Baptist Church in Sand Flat. Both Velma and Mattie also quilted with the Cedar Street Methodist Church Quilt Group. Quilts became Velma's new love in latter years. She entered many quilt contests and had several Blue Ribbons for first place and many 2nd and 3rd place ribbons to her credit.

Velma was known for her ready smile and good deeds all over Tyler.464
