Obituary for:
Mattie Dock Coulter Bott
Services for Mattie Dock Coulter Bott, 93, of Houston and formerly of Tyler, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2008, at Lloyd James Funeral chapel in Tyler. Burial will be in Sand Flat Cemetery under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home. Mrs. Bott died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy.
Mattie was born July 22, 1914, in Smith County, midway between the communities of Red Springs and Sand Flat, to the late Jeff and Bessie Baker Coulter. She attended Sand Flat School and graduated from Tyler High School in 1931 with a membership in the National Honors Society. Mattie received a teacher's degree in 1933 after attending both Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches, and East Texas State College in Commerce. She taught elementary education at Hopewell School. She also was a homemaker and a longtime employee of Mayer & Schmidt and Dillard's Department Stores in Tyler. She was a devout Christian and a longstanding member of the First Baptist Church of Tyler. She was an avid quilter for several church organizations and specialized in making quilts for babies born with AIDS.
Mattie lived in Tyler most of her life and moved to Houston to be near her sons for the past eight years. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Fred Lewis Bott in 1976; son, Jerry Frederick Bott in 1990; sister, Lois Coulter Walton in 2005; and brother, Clyde Jefferson Coulter in 1988.
She is survived by her son, Don Coulter Bott and wife Barbara Benson Bott of Katy; son Jeff Lewis Bott and wife Joan Oleksak Bott of Katy; daughter-in-law, Nancy Rice Bott of Los Angeles, Calif.; six grandchildren, Sarah Bott Fahey and husband Joseph Patrick Fahey of Los Angeles, Calif., Stephanie Bott McLemore and husband Nathan Allen McLemore of Seattle, Wash., Karen Bott O'Dea and husband Kevin Michael O'Dea of Granite Bay, Calif., Kimberly Dawn Bott of Houston, Steven Lewis Bott and wife Ulla Strindberg Bott of Round Rock, Leanne Bott Hegyesi and husband Ronald Joseph Hegyesi of Cincinnati, Ohio; 13 great-grandchildren, Owen Coulter Fahey, Declan Burke Fahey, Tyler Coulter McLemore, Finnegan Rice McLemore, Michael Coulter O'Dea, Matthew Robert O'Dea, Mason Tyler O'Dea, Emilie Katrina Bott, Dylan Lewis Bott, Hanna Marie Bott, Nicholas Joseph Hegyesi, Kathleen Nicole Hegyesi and Tyler Jeffrey Hegyesi.

Mattie Bott loved her ancestry and heritage. Her sons have researched the family tree and have found 15,820 of her blood relatives as of this date. She was very involved from an early age in the maintenance and fundraising for Sand Flat Cemetery where she has 100 blood relatives buried, plus her late husband.
Mattie was a gracious and loving Southern lady. She had a wonderful long life and will be missed by all of her many friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Sand Flat Cemetery Association, c/o Secretary-Treasurer, Teddy McDowell, 1630 CR313 West, Tyler, 75706-2812.
Published in the Tyler Morning Telegraph from 6/15/2008 - 6/16/2008.
CORRECTION NOTES:1. The following sentence was expanded: “She was an avid quilter for several church organizations and specialized in making quilts for babies born with AIDS with the ABC Quilters Guild.”
2. The actual birth date for Mattie Dock Bott nee Coulter was July 22, 1914. However, the Social Security Administration has the birth date as July 19, 1914. Therefore all legal documents, including the death certificate, must have July 19, 1914.
3. The following sentence: “Mattie lived in Tyler most of her life and moved to Houston to be near her sons for the past eight years.” This should have said six years and not eight years. Mattie Dock Coulter Bott entered Atria Assisted Living in Houston on January 20, 2002.
