Menefee Cemetery

In 1994 an attempt was made to locate this pioneer cemetery. It was important to determine the location because of the US 218 and Us 34 by-passes north of Mount Pleasant.

The cemetery was somewhere in the SE 1/4 of Section 34, Marion Township, Henry County, Iowa. At least three and as many as seven grave stones were reported, including a dated stone for Lucy Manefee 1795-1836 and stones for two Farmer children. Lucy Partlow Menefee was the wife of John M. Menefee (1791-1874 and he owned the SE 1/4 of Section 34 between 1841 and 1849. Their daughter Lucy married a Farmer and lived in the area between 1842-1844.

Two possible sites were marked. #1 an area 20 x 30 m and located approximately 150 m exterior to the proposed Mt. Pleasant bypass. A second site (#2) was mentioned which is approximately 175 m further west. It was recommended that the entire area between Big Creek and the farm pond, north of the gate between the Hassenfritz and Thornton farms be avoided, when constructing these bypasses.

I looked carefully at the 1870 plat map of the area and no crosses were found on it.
