Fifth Generation

Family of Johannes (John?) REISINGER (14) & Magdalena

27. Johan REISINGER, 5G Uncle, M. Born in York County, PA on 27 Aug 1773. Christened on 3 Oct 1773 in York County, PA. Salem Lutheran (Strayer's) Church.

28. Johannes REISINGER, 5G Uncle, M. Born in York County, PA on 27 Mar 1775. Christened on 7 May 1775 in York County, PA. Salem Lutheran (Strayer's) Church.

29. Catharina REISINGER, 5G Aunt, F. Born in York County, PA on 14 Feb 1777. Christened on 8 Apr 1777 in Emanuel Reformed Church, Hanover, PA. York County Church Records of the 18th Century p 90.

On 29 Mar 1812 when Catharina was 35, she married Benjamin KLEINFELDER, M, in Saint Matthew's Lutheran, Hanover, PA.

30. Jacob REISINGER, GGGG Grandfather, M. Born in York County, PA on 22 May 1779. Jacob died in 1830/1831 in Hanover Borough, York County, PA. Christened on 13 Jun 1779 in Emanuel Reformed Church, Hanover, PA. Vol 1 York County Church Records of the 18th Century p 92. Occupation: Hatter.

John Bard signed a document as administrator of the estate of John Reisinger. He is called son-in-law. A John Barth and wife Susanna were sponsors in 1811 at the birth of Johannes son of Jacob and Judith Reisinger. These two items placed together gives me the indication that Jacob the hatter is the correct son. Also the census of 1820 and 1830 seem to indicate that Jacob the blacksmith is 30 in 1820 and 40 in 1830. This would make him born 1790 and ca ten years younger than Jacob the hatter.

Jacob is found in the 1820 Hanover Borough census. p 57 He is listed as a hatter.

to 10 - one boy

to 16 - one boy, one girl

to 18 - two boys

to 30 - three boys

to 45 - one man

45+ - one lady

Next door lives Alexander McIlvain (Plastier) and his wife Mary

Alexander has three extra boys/men to 30

Jacob is found in the 1830 census for Hanover Borough, York County, PA p 219.

There is another Jacob in the 1820 census and also in the 1830 census. He is a Blacksmith.

Which one of these Jacob's is the son of John and Magdaline. I would guess he is as he had a son John and a daughter Magdalina.

His will is dated Dec 23 1830 and probated March 4, 1831. In it it says he was a hatter and has living son John and daughter Magdalena wife of John Gerver and daughter Mary wife of Alexander McIlvain.

Served in Captain Spangler's company of York Volunteers.. For a few days were attached to the 5th regiment. They marched from York on August 29, 1814, because of the invasion of Baltimore.

1845 History of York County, PA p 457

There are deed papers found, in York County, for Alexander, William, John Q., Jefferson M. McILVAIN, and Ann Mary (McILVAIN) ARGO. They list their father as Alexander McILVAIN and their grandfather as Jacob REISINGER. They are dated 1846 - 1855 and were not filed in York County until 1877. I presume not until after their mother's death. Mary's children had inherited the land from her father Jacob REISINGER, but Mary could use her share of the money earned from it until her death. Deed Book 6C p 290 - 300

Jacob married Judith, GGGG Grandmother, F. Born ca 1775. Judith died on 8 May 1829 in Hanover Borough, York County, PA. Buried in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Hanover, York County, PA.

Newspaper article of May 12, 1829 in the Hanoverian says she died of consumption and aged 54.

They had the following children:

55 i. Anna Maria (Mary), F (1800-<1877)

56 ii. Samuel, M (1808-1828)

57 iii. Johannes, M (1811-)

58 iv. Magdalina, F

31. Magdalene REISINGER, 5G Aunt, F. Born in York County, PA in 1789. Christened on 8 Nov 1789 in York County, PA. Conejohela or "Cansdochly' Church.

From IGI-not sure if she belongs to family.

32. Elisabeth REISINGER, 5G Aunt, F. Born in York County, PA on 26 Feb 1793. Vol 1 York County Church Records of the 18th Century p212. Christened on 16 May 1793 in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, York County.

On 28 May 1811 when Elisabeth was 18, she married George HARTMAN, M, in Saint Matthew's Lutheran, Hanover, PA.

John Bard signed a document as administrator of the estate of John Reisinger. He is called son-in-law. A John Barth and wife Susanna were sponsors in 1811 at the birth of Johannes son of Jacob and Judith Reisinger.

35. John Jacob? REISINGER, 5G Uncle, M. Born in 1790. was baptized in Christ Lutheran Church, York, PA on 25 Dec 1790. sponsors Jones and Eva Spengler.

He would be the correct age to be the blacksmith. Were these the correct John and Magdalina as parents or not. There could be another John and Magdalina in York borough. p 183 of Reisinger Report.

36. Michael? REISINGER, 5G Uncle, M. Born in York County, PA on 23 Nov 1796. was baptized in Christ Lutheran Church, York, PA on 14 Apr 1797. John and Elizabeth Mayer sponsors.

From the Annuals of Richland County, Ohio 1996

A. McElvain, W. McElvain and J. Q. McIlvain were part of the Mansfield Fire Department. Mansfield Fire Company No 1 was organized March 8, 1848 in the red school house, on the corner of fourth and Mulberry. Colonel Alex McIlvain was foreman of the company and at one time Col. Alex McIlvain was colonel of the Sixth Regiment Ohio Vol. Inf. and gave up his life as a citizen soldier in the line of duty at Rocky Face Ridge, GA.

On 1 Oct 1818 when Anna Maria (Mary) was 18, she married Alexander McILVAIN, GGG Grandfather, M, son of Moses B. McILVAIN, M (18 Mar 1774-21 Apr 1853) & Mary N. LARIMER, F (1 Jun 1773-25 Jan 1858), in Hanover by Rev. Meischeimer. Hanover Guardian 7 October 1818. Born in Adams County, PA on 6/26 Apr 1800. Alexander died ca 1834 in Mt. Pleasant Twp. Adams County, PA Or Else On Way To Richland County, OH Or Shortly After Arriving. gedcom says 1 Oct 1854. not possible by records I find. Occupation: Plastier.

I find an Alexander McIlvaine in York County PA Hanover Borough p221 of the 1830 census. Probably died ca 1835.

Sold land in Borough of Hanover, York County PA for the ME church 1 March 1830

land records indicate that he is the husband of Mary Resinger

From Moses B. McIlvain's will

"....5th It is my will and I do direct that immediately after my beloved wife's decease, that my real estate shall be sold to the best advantage and the proceeds there of to be divided As follows viz// I will and bequest to the heirs of my son Alexander two hundred dollars to be divided between them share and share alike, which shall be the full amount of his part. and the balance my real estate to be divided into four equal shares between my sons, George, James H. and John and my daughter Margaret Share and Share alike....." son John McIlvain to be Executor.

Dispersement #4 to settle estate states "Alexander McIlvain's heirs - Special Legacy $200." This to me links my husband's ancestor Alexander McIlvain, who died ca 15 -20 years earlier, to him.

The following papers have been found that may be part of Alexander's estate settlement. Calls him late of Mt. Pleasant township. With his father-in-law dying in 1831 he may have gone back to Mt. Pleasant township.

York County 2M p 80 William McIlvain of Baltimore County, Maryland Dr. William McIlvain and Adam Eicheeberger (sp) Esq's of the Borough of York county of York and state of Pennsylvania. Letter of Administration was set and granted to William McIlvain this 23 day of Jun 1834.

Then on 16 Jun 1838 real estate was sold by virtue of Testators will and a special act of assembly....$500 in hand and the residue in equal annual payments of $260... The 1st payment the 1 Apr 1839 sold to Jacob Will...unpaid will either be turned over to the heirs at cash value or accounted for by this accountant as they become due. $1540.00. Balance in account to be $1784.14. A list of dispersements were made amounting to $703.29 with a balance on hand left after dispersement of $1080.75. Dated 7 Jul 1838 and an added note 7 aug 1838 copy confirmed will (Some say this may be papers relating to a Alexander McIlvain who died in 1793 in Mt. Pleasant twp.)

We do know that sometime between the summer 1830 and 1840 Alexander is no longer with his family. His last child a daughter was not in the 1830 census but is five to ten in the 1840 Richland county OH census. This may place his death ca 1835. Over the years since the middle of the last century, many Richland Countians traveled overland and "around the horn" in search of gold in the West. Here is an account of a reunion held years later, by some who had returned.

"Seated at a richly laden table at the Vonhof, Thursday night, were the following residents of Mansfield who crossed the continent in 1850 to the gold fields of California........William McIlvain,....... In the party was a representative of the Mansfield Weekly News who had a special invitation to participate in the festivities...."

"William McIlvain gave an account of a voyage 20 Richland County men had on board the "Philadelphia" on the isthmus route."......

William McIlvain moved to vote a thanks to the three entertainers for their hospitality, which carried unanimously......"

Have a copy of her obituary. It mentions that two children died in infancy. It also states that they moved west, settling in Mercer County MO in *1854 and near Mercer where they lived until 1885. They removed to Iowa living in Lineville awhile then buying and coming to the property near the Argo school house, two and one-half miles east of Pleasanton, living there until the death of Mr. Argo March 30, 1898.

On 19 Jul 1843 when Anna Mary Catherine Judith was 15, she married William ARGO, GG Grandfather, M, son of John A. (? Alden) ARGO, M (bef 1762-bef 1830) & Naomi ??? William died in Spring Valley Near Pleasanton, IA on 30 Mar 1898; he was 73. Buried in Gammill Cemetery, Hamilton Twp. Decatur Co., IA. Occupation: Cooper, Store Owner, Farmer. Education: Could Read And Write.

In Decatur Co. Hamilton Twp on William Argo's death certificate it states that he was born in Mansfield, OH. William is probably the 5-10 yr old in the Federal 1830 census of the William Burge family, as he was 5 1/2 years old in Nov. 1830, the date of the Census. Did he have a step brother, half brother or a brother; as another boy is 0-5 years old? In the 1840 federal census Richland Co. OH Burge, Wm L. there is a male 15-20 and one male 30-40 and one female 30-40. We know he married on July 19, 1843 in Richland Co. Anna Mary McIlvain and married by George Leiter. L. Wesley Argo in "The Argo Families Revisited", believed Wm. probably 'descended from one of the five Argo brothers who migrated from Delaware westward through Greene County, Pennsylvania, probably the son of one of the unknown brothers of Smith Argo (23-AY)' (I believe probably a brother of Smith by a later marriage.) Possibly lived in the upper portion of West VA near Greene Co., PA or between PA and OH. In Mansfield (Richland County) no records of any Argos are found during 1820-1830. A Smith Argo is found in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio 1820 Ohio census. "Smith Argo, males one 0-10, two 10-16, one 26-24, females, three 0-10, one 26-45. Argo in his book states Smith Argo was in Wayne County (near Richland County) in 1819 but returned to Greene County, PA where he was in the 1810 and 1830 census. No record of land in Wayne Co., Ohio was found for Smith Argo. I do strongly follow the idea that John Alden Argo was Smith Argo's father or brother. The only way this can be proved or disproved would be to obtain an old old family Bible from the Argo family In 1830 land records of Richland(later Ashland) County, Ohio. "2nd day of March A.D. 1830 we find William Burge and Naomi Burge his wife purchased in Vermillion Twp. 'North part of the East half of the Northwest quarter of Section #11 Township No 21, Range 16 of this Virginia Military District School lands gran ed by Congress for the use of Schools and subject to the regulations and restrictions of the Legislature containing 22 acres 3 roods and 31 1/2 perches be the same more or less'. After William and Anna Mary Argo are married we find land records in Richland Co., Ohio. One dated 13th day of March 1848 "they purchased Lot #2 in Frees Addition, Mansfield from John Free and wife." One dated July 8, 1848 "William Argo and Anna Mary his wife to Ann Winfield and Elizabeth Watson the East half of lot #2 in Frees Addition, Mansfield. Anna Mary signed with her mark. They sold on 4th day of May Anno Domini 1854 The west half of Lot #2 in Frees Addition in Mansfield, Ohio. They are in the 1850 Richland County, Ohio, Mansfield Census.
