To New Amsterdam arriving Aug 1657. Quote from Peter Stuyvesant and His New

York; Kessler, Henry H and Eugene Rachilis; Randon House 1959 pp186-191

"In the summer of 1657 there came to Manhattan a danger to the Dutch

Reformed Church potentially greater than any of its former tribulations with

the Lutherans, Jews or Indians. On Aug 6, a clear and sunny day, New

Amsterdam met its first Quakers...............{a ship (Woodhouse) came from

the sea to this place,) they wrote, (having no flag flying from the topmast,

nor from any other place on the ship; only from the foremast a small burgee

floated to indicate the wind....).....They seized Hodgson and searched him;

the most dangerous weapon they found was the small Bible carried by all

Friends.........."

It goes on the say he was stripped to the waist, whipped til back was raw.

Later he was released if he would leave New Netherland and never return.

Later New Netherland became New York.

It is said (not proven) that Hodgson the Quaker missionary is the forefather of the

majority of the American Hodgson/Hodsons/Hodgins. It is said that in 1682

Robert received from William Penn a land grant of 10,000 acres on the

Susquehanna River, and moved his wife and family there. It is believed that

he did settle north of Philadelphia near Stockerham. He died sometime

between 1690 and 1695 and he was in his seventies.

I have not documented this myself. It was sent to me. Provided in case you

want to attempt to document it. I have not documented the children either.

he died in 1732 in Chester County, PA; when he was 51.

(There are conflicting stories and it appears neither story can be documented as our line)

Disclaimer: The children other than George I have not documented myself. I am not sure

they are correct. The first story I heard was that Robert Hod(g)son with his

wife and three sons left the British Isles for America in 1710. All but

George died on the ship. He moved his family from England to Ireland because

of the persecution of the Quakers. He became a follower of George Fox

and became a Quaker evangelist.

Others say this story is not true and that the following relates to this Robert Hodgson.

Records of Chester County and Delaware County show that Robert Hodgson II

purchased and sold several pieces of land among them:

1. 50 acres in Concord Twp

2. 50 acres in Springfield

3. 3500 acres in old Chester County on Conestoga Creek

4. 250 acres in East Nottingham twp and 660 acres in the same township.

He died at his home on Conestoga Creek. Children's names are taken from his

will.

Disclaimer: I have not found sufficient proof to show that our George relates here. Some trace

the line way back into England. I have not proved them right or wrong. I am

more interested in the descendants.
