Note: If you find "They had one child". These words are generated by my genealogical program. There may be more children, but I only entered one.

First Generation

1. (Most Likely Father) James ARGO. Born ? in Scotland. Came America Circa

1698. Occupation Farmer, purchased 200 acres in James City County.

*No proof of the above named person being the father of Alexander but it

seems a very good possibility.

ca 1698 James landed in Virginia...purchased 200 acres of land in James City

County. His sons Joseph, Alexander & William crossed the Bay, they came

first to Smith Island on southern tip of Somerset County. Alexander and

William decided to settle near the head water of the Wicomico River.

Second Generation

2. Alexander ARGO. Born Circa 1677/1694 in Virginia or Delaware, between 100

and 107 when he died. Died before 1794 in Sussex County, Delaware.

Occupation Farmer. Signed with a mark - A with a check mark.

If Rev. William Argo is Alexander's son the list below are probably all his

children. Lived 1723 in Somerset Co., MD. lived 1735 on "Coxes Advice",

Somerset Co., MD. In 1746 bought 395 acres in Sussex Co., Del. p 42 Argo

Families Revisited. 1753 Sold land in MD. In 1753 signed agreement to sell

Del. land 1784, "Margaret Elliott's Will On November 18, 1723, purchased 200

a called "Choyce" p41 Argo book. His mark was an open A with a check mark

through it. This is what he signed his documents with. Sometime between 1785

and 1794, the oldest patriarch of the Argo family, passed away having lived

out his five-score years; he left no record of his passing, so no last will

and testament and no permanently marked resting place.

Third Generation

6. Pernell ARGO. Born before 1758. Tradition says he was K.I.A. in the

Revolutionary War.

7. John A. (? Alden) ARGO. M. Born bef 1762 in Sussex County, Delaware

(family Says). John A. (? Alden) died in Greene Co, PA bef 1830; (by 1830

Naomi married to Burge.) he was 68. Occupation: Unknown.

Una (Argo) Leeper says his name is John Alden Argo and he was from Delaware.

No land records are found for him in OH. No date of marriage for him and

Naomi are found in OH. He does not appear in any OH or PA census. From his

wife's age it appears that he may have been ca 25 at the time of his death,

maybe even in his 60's at the time of his marriage to Naomi and at the time

of his death. No records can be found for his existence, for sure or to

completely link him to Rev. Wm. Argo or Alexander Argo. No records of him

are found in Jefferson, Wayne, Richland or Ashland Counties of Ohio. The

1880 census says Ohio born. I question that. (Mercer County Census of son

William Argo) I am beginning to believe Wm. Argo may have been an orphan and

Wm L. Burge and his wife Naomi took him as a very young child to raise and

were told to keep Argo name and to let him know who his father was.

Mar 23, 1998

I still believe that William links to John A. Argo. If not his son in old

age, the son of a unknown son. I am sure there were more than two children.

Fourth Generation

Family of John A. (? Alden) ARGO (1) & Naomi ??? (was It SMITH?)

15. William ARGO. Born 15 Mar 1825 in Mansfield, OH or Jefferson County, OH.

Died 30 Mar 1898 in Spring Valley, near Pleasanton, IA. Buried in Gammill

Cemetery, Hamilton Twp., Decatur County, IA. Occupation Cooper, store owner,

farmer. Education Could read and write.

In Hamilton Twp., Decatur County, on William Argo's death certificate it

states that he was born in Mansfield, OH. William is probably the 5-10 year

old in the Federal 1830 Census of the William Burge family, as he was 5 1/2

years old in Nov. 1830, the date of the Census. Did he have a step brother,

half brother or a brother; as another boy is 0-5 years old? In the 1840

Federal Census Richland Co. OH Burge, William L. there is a male 15-20 and

one male 30-40 and one female 30-40. We know he married on July 19, 1843 in

Richland Co. Anna Mary McIlvain and married by George Leiter. L. Wesley Argo

in The Argo Families Revisited, believed William. probably 'descended from

one of the five Argo brothers who migrated from Delaware westward through

Greene County, Pennsylvania, probably the son of one of the unknown brothers

of Smith Argo (23-AY)' (I believe probably a brother of Smith by a later

marriage.) Possibly lived in the upper portion of West Virginia near Greene

Co., PA or between PA and OH. In Mansfield, Richland County, no records of

any Argos are found during 1820-1830. A Smith Argo is found in Chippewa

Township, Wayne County, Ohio 1820 Ohio Census. "Smith Argo, males one 0-10,

two 10-16, one 26-24, females, three 0-10, one 26-45. Argo in his book

states Smith Argo was in Wayne County (near Richland County) in 1819 but

returned to Greene County, PA where he was in the 1810 and 1830 census. No

record of land in Wayne Co., Ohio was found for Smith Argo. I do strongly

follow the idea that John Alden Argo was Smith Argo's father or brother. The

only way this can be proved or disproved would be to obtain an old family

Bible from the Argo family In 1830 Land Records of Richland (later Ashland)

County, Ohio. "2nd day of March A.D. 1830 we find William Burge and Naomi

Burge his wife purchased in Vermillion Twp. 'North part of the East half of

the Northwest quarter of Section #11 Township No 21, Range 16 of this

Virginia Military District School lands granted by Congress for the use of

Schools and subject to the regulations and restrictions of the Legislature

containing 22 acres 3 roods and 31 1/2 perches be the same more or less'.

After William and Anna Mary Argo are married we find land records in

Richland Co., Ohio. One dated 13th day of March 1848 "they purchased Lot #2

in Frees Addition, Mansfield from John Free and wife." One dated July 8,

1848 "William Argo and Anna Mary his wife to Ann Winfield and Elizabeth

Watson the East half of lot #2 in Frees Addition, Mansfield. Anna Mary

signed with her mark. They sold on 4th day of May Anno Domini 1854 The west

found for when he purchased the land. There is a deed made in State of

Virginia in September 8, 1858 is for SE1/4 36-67-24, 160 A, probably

adjoining the Argo land and was sold by Alfred J. Burge of the county of

Wood and the State of Virginia. Alfred J. Burge and Lucinda on 19th Feb.

49. Wallace (Dude) ARGO. Born ? Jul 1880 Grew up around Mercer, MO. Died in

North Dakota, (also lived in Mommouth Springs, AK).

Wallace Argo grew up around Mercer, MO. *Family notes say he either married

a Kendall or was married at Kendell MO. (They probably mean Tindall MO) Her

first wife was Meldora, but called Dora. They had two sons.

On August 25, 1995 we went to both Princeton (Mercer Co.) and Trenton

(Grundy Co.) MO., searching for marriage and/or death records for Dora. We

found none. We also was able to search the cemetery book for Wayne County,

IA with no luck. My guess would be that she was married in the Arnold, NE

area and maybe died in the Decatur County, IA area. I have not checked

there, yet.

He was married three times, no children by his second marriage. Once he was

married at Alden Darrow Argo's place in Arkansas. Believe 3rd. marriage was

to sister Lula's husband Henry Em(m)ery sister. (all or part indian). Then

Wallace and his wife went back to North Dakota. They had a son and a

daughter. He may be buried in North Dakota. Wallace lost a leg when he was

hopping a freight train. He slipped and fell and his leg was cut off by the

train. Another possible spelling of his nickname is Dawd. Lived in 1926

Mommouth Springs, AK.
