This is an extract from an e-mail which was sent by Abi Campion

"There had always been a story in my family that John Crutchley had eloped with a lady from Odell Castle where the Percival family were living, but we could never find any proof, although my Grandfather has a wooden chest that has come down through the eldest son which is supposed to have come from the Castle. However, when I found Tilly (John's great great granddaughter through Sarah Jane and William Bradshaw) she confirmed that she had been told the same thing. After comparing notes and digging a bit more we believe there is a slight truth in it.
John Crutchley was born in about 1777. On the 1861 census he says he was born in Pytchley Northamptonshire but on the 1851 he put not known. I can't find any Crutchleys born in Pytchley at that time, but there are quite a few in Walgrave, the next village. We are still working on that! We know that John was a soldier either in the 41st or 51st Regiment and on his burial entry the vicar has written "Waterloo Soldier". He also lists himself as a master tailor on some documents. We believe his wife was Sarah Cummings (b c1786) although we haven't yet found a marriage cert. His daughter Sarah Jane was born in London in 1821, and son George born at Snow Hill in London in 1823. Here's the bit we think the story comes from!
Lady Elizabeth Perceval (younger sister of Spencer Perceval, assassinated PM and MP for Northampton) lived at Odell Castle and Bruton Street in London. In her will dated 1823 she mentions sisters Sarah and Elizabeth Cummings who had worked for her and she had dismissed. She regrets dismissing them, and makes arrangements so that if they can be found they can be given money to set up a business and perhaps buy a house together. She begs God's forgiveness in the matter. She didn't die until 1846. We believe that Sarah Cummings was dismissed by Lady Elizabeth and married John Crutchley between about 1816 and 1820, and when Lady Elizabeth found them she took the children (Sarah Jane and George) to work at Odell. When Sarah died in 1841 she was buried at Odell, and on the 1841 census Sarah Jane, George and William Bradshaw are living in Stable Row with Sarah Jane and Wm's son Joseph. Sarah Jane and George both signed their marriage certificates, but their spouses both make their mark, which would indicate that athough they were listed as servant and gardener at Odell Castle, they must have had an education.
In 1851 and 1861 John Crutchley is living with Sarah Jane and William. Sarah Jane died in 1864 after the birth of her son George (who also died, aged 4 months) and William Bradshaw died in 1866. The children went to live with different friends and relatives (the youngest boy, Mark, was in the workhouse in 1871) and John Crutchley who was almost 90 went to live with his son George, who was now living in Stockley Street in Northampton. He died in 1869 aged 92. George died in 1872, and his wife Ann (who had been a cook at Odell Castle) died in 1914. Their son Benjamin was my Grandfather's grandfather."

I have found an entry in the 1841 census which contradicts the statement above. They were living in Castle Yard. I have found no entry for them in Stable Row. However, more investigation is needed.

Also, as John had described himself variously as a soldier, watch maker, linen draper and master tailor I think it likely that he was a storyteller of sorts.
