The Calvary Bible Church in Lewistown paid final tribute to its founding pastor during an August 29 memorial service.
The Reverend Harold Snider - pastor, author, editor, composer, evangelist and missionary - died in Tacoma, Washington August 9 at age 93. A "real live nephew of Uncle Sam," Snider was born on the Fourth of July at the turn of the century (1900) in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
Snider's ministry began in 1928, when he was ordained into the Church of the Brethren at Hagerstown, Maryland. He spent his first five years of ministry at the denomination's church in Sharpsburg, Maryland.
While living in Hagerstown, Snider had spent three years at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Then in 1933, Reverend Snider accepted the call to minister at a small mission church in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The next year, he enrolled in Shepherd State Teacher's College, graduating cum laude as class valedictorian four years later.
His accomplishments while earning his bachelor's degree landed a listing in the 1938 version of "Who's Who in Colleges and Universities in America."
Reverend Snider began his ministry in Lewistown December 31, 1940 as pastor of the Shaw Avenue Church of the Brethren. He resigned April 20, 1948, but remained as pastor. Three years later after the Church Council adopted the new name of Calvary Bible Church, Snider became the founding pastor of the newly-formed church April 22, 1951. At the time, the congregation held services in the Lewistown Armory.
Services moved from the Armory to a new location at 315 South Pine Road December 31, 1951 - exactly 11 years to the day after Reverend Snider's arrival in the Lewistown area.
The well-liked pastor resigned from the Calvary Bible Church September 6, 1959 and five days later was busy with his missionary work at Puerta La Cruz, Venezuela.
Snider retired in 1965, moving first to Phoenix, Arizona and later to Tacoma, Washington.
His wife Mildred and son Terry still live there.
Pastor Snider, who was interred at Mountain View Memorial Park in Tacoma after a memorial service at Central Baptist Church, is also survived by two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The local memorial service featured highlights of Snider's life and ministry via some historical notes read by the associate church pastor and testimonials from the Reverend Harold Baker, Mary Jane Partchey (for Betty Myers), Pauline Stuckey, William Stuckey, Connie Moen and Helen Goss. Former pastor Reverend Terry R. Smith sent a letter which was read by Jesse Davis.
The servive included hymns ("The Church's One Foundation" and "Face to Face"), Scripture readings and the closing meditation by Associate Pastor Houtz.
The church had previously honored Snider by electing him as "pastor emeritus" of the church June 19, 1974. At the time, the congregation presented a plaque etched with these words:
"In appreciation to God and with gratitude for His faithful servant, The Calvary Bible Church, Lewistown, Pennsylvania elected Harold Snider Pastor Emeritus June 19, 1974. Loving Pastor, faithful expositor of the word, staunch defender of the faith and dedicated disciple of Jesus Christ."
It seemed a fitting tribute to someone who - before he reached his 80th birthday - had read the entire Bible in 18 versions and the New Testament in another 16 versions. Reverend Snider also started the first ever gospel broadcast on local radio station WMRF, instituting the program "Bible for Today." He also authored many books and booklets, publishing five of them, including "Does the Bible Sanction War?" and "That Amazing Book - Genesis!" At one time, his name and accomplishments appeared in "Who's Who Among Clergymen in the Western Hemisphere."
Snider's name also showed up in the 1981 edition of the "Guiness Book of World Records" for the closest recorded instances of a golfer scoring three consecutive holes-in-one. Reverend Snider aced the 8th, 13th and 14th holes of the Ironwood Golf Course in Phoenix, Arizona during a June 9, 1976 round. The feat tied a similar accomplishment by a Dr. Joseph Boydstone at the 3rd, 4th, and 9th holes of the Bakersfield Golf Course in California during an October 10, 1962 round.
But nothing seems to match the warm sentiments and cherished memories of those who knew him in Lewistown.
Much of that sentiment derives from Snider's adherence to the Bible verse printed on the front of the program folders for his memorial service at the local church: "Take heed...unto yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood..."
