William Stiffler, aged 85, one of the oldest residents of the city and a retired hotel proprietor, died at 12 midnight at the Altoona hospital from a complication of diseases incident to advanced years. He was taken to the hospital two weeks ago from his home at 914 Chestnut avenue. Mr. Stiffler was born in Bedford county in the vicinity of Claysburg March 15, 1836. He spent his earlier days in Bedford county and during the Civil war was a member of the 103rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, commanded by Captain Dougherty. His service covered the period toward the latter part of the war. After growing to manhood in Bedford county Mr. Stiffler came to Blair county and located near Martinsburg where he followed farming and finally in 1882 came to Altoona where he subsequently became proprietor of the old Aldine hotel on Eleventh street. Prior to taking charge of the Aldine, however, he operated the American House in Hollidaysburg for a brief period. Mr. Stiffler retired from active business after operating the Aldine for about six years and since that time was not actively engaged. In 1861 he was married to Miss Eve Clapper of Clappertown who preceded him to the grave three years ago. He is survived by two children, Miss Martha Stiffler and H.C. Stiffler, both of this city; also by two brothers, Jacob of Portland, Ore., and Joseph of Eaton, Ind. Ex-Sheriff James M. Stiffler was a brother of the deceased Altoonan who was widely known both in this city and throughout Blair and Bedford counties. Three grandsons and two great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Stiffler was a member of the Lutheran church and at the time of his death was aged 85 years, 3 months and 15 days. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at an hour to be announced later from the undertaking parlors of Hickey & O'Neill, Dr. Marion J. Kline of the First Lutheran church to be in charge. Interment will be made in the family plot at Rose Hill. Friends have been asked to omit flowers.
