Individual Note: Married in the Reformed Dutch Church (RDC) at Fort Plain in Minden Twp., the history of this church indicates that services were performed exclusively in German in the mid to late 1700's right up until the mid to late 1800's because most of the settlers in the Fort Plain area were either German immigrants or of German descent. As a result, all services in this church were conducted in German and the records were, therefore, also recorded in German. John DeGeer's wife was definitely of German descent.
Rev. A. Christian Diedrich Peck was the church's pastor from 1788 to 1796 and most likely performed the January 1791 marriage of John DeGeer. However, historians of that era reported that German speaking ministers "mangled the spelling of English names in particular "as well as other non-German surnames. Thus, John DeGeer was recorded as Jean Dekier and the translation of the marriage was transcribed exactly as follows:
January 26, 1791 - Jean Dekier, the son of Jean Dekier married Anna Cuntermann the daughter of Conrad Cuntermann, (deceased).
Montgomery County's Department of History & Archives has 2-3 versions of the Countryman Family Genealogy on file which report that:
1. The modern day spelling of the family name is Countryman;
2. Anna Countryman was the daughter of Conrad Countryman II;
3. Conrad Countryman II died in 1790; and
4. Anna Countryman married Jean Dekier (who is reported later as DeGier, Degeur and Degiur in other NY church records)
Thus it may be seen that (aside from the mangled spelling of the groom's name) the record is accurate regarding the bride's genealogy. If one were to assume that Rev. Peck was correct in his recording that the groom was named after his father then there is a reasonable possibility that he groom was John DeGeer II (a.k.a. John DeGier II, John Degeur and John Degiur as reported in the baptism records of his three sons).
THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THERE WAS A DEGEER FAMILY LIVING IN AREA OF FONDA, NY IS BASED ON THIS CHURCH RECORD AND 11 OTHER RECORDS FOUND IN NEARBY CHURCHES.

MAN, 75, FATALLY INJURED IN AUTO MISHAP
AGED VICTIM WALKS INTO PATH OF AUTO
Joel DeGeer Dies in Hurley Hospital 15 Minutes After Accident
An aged man was injured fatally and three other persons were hurt, two small boys seriously, in automobile accidents here late Tuesday.
Joel DeGeer, 75 years old, 629 Ruth-av, was run over at Saginaw-st and Ruth-av at 6:55 p. m., by an automobile driven by Foster Merrill, 18 years old, 801 Baltimore-blvd. His chest was crushed. He died 15 minutes later, just after being admitted to an emergency room at Hurley hospital. The body was removed to the Groves & Co. funeral home.
Questioned by Traffic Investigator Clair J. Brown, Merrill said the aged man ran into the path of his car. He was driving north. DeGeer was struck while crossing Saginaw-st from west to east. Merrill said he was blinded by the lights of a southbound car and that when DeGeer appeared he was so close he was unable to avoid running him down.

FORMER LOOMIS RESIDENT KILLED WEDNESDAY AT FLINT
Funeral Rites for Joel DeGeer to be Held This Afternoon from Lansing Home
The remains of Joel DeGeer, of Flint, were brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lansing, of Herrick Thursday and funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at two o'clock, from the home, Rev. Clarence L. Wheaton, of Independence, Mo., (officiating).
Very few particulars can be learned as we go to press but it is thought that Mr. DeGeer met his death, having stepped in front of an automobile in the streets of Flint.
Mr. DeGeer was for many years a resident near Loomis, where he leaves a wide circle of friends who regret to learn of his sudden demise.
