Individual Note: Alexander McCreery served in the Revolutionary War. He volunteered May 1, 1777 at Newburgh for four months service as a private under Captain Humphrey and Colonel Paulding. He also served three months in 1778 under the same officers and two months under Captain Tilford and Colonel McClaugherty.
In 1779, he served three months under Captain Cuddeback and Colonel Cantine.
While he was stationed at Fort Montgomery, the fort was attacked and many of the soldiers were captured by the British, but Alexander McCreery's Company escaped. During the later part of the Revolutionary War, Alexander was stationed on the frontier near Minisink to guard against the Indians and the Torries.
After completing his military service, Alexander moved to the village of Florida in Orange Co., New York in 1782. He and Eunice Armstrong were married Jan. 6, 1783 in the Presbyterian Church in Goshen, Orange Co., NY and started their married life in Hopewell, Montgomery Twp., Ulster Co., NY. He may have been employed in one of the many Grist Mills, Flour Mills, or Lumber Mills there because of the rapid streams in the area.
In 1791, Alexander and his family moved to the vicinity of Warwick in Orange County. Nothing is known of the eight years they spent there.
Alexander McCreery and his family moved to Ulysses, Seneca Co., New York in 1799. He purchased and operated a farm here for ten or eleven years. On April 18, 1810, Alexander sold the farm in Ulysses to Benjamin Credit for $1,480 and moved to Hector Town in what is now Schuyler Co., New York, approximately two miles north of Burdett. He purchased a portion of Lot No. 50. Sometime after 1810, Alexander purchased a portion of Lot No. 59 which lies immediately across Covert Road from Lot No. 50. Both parcels are on the west side of Satterly Hill Road. Alexander tilled the soil and grew feed and grain crops as well as fruit from as orchard.
Alexander McCreery was a deacon for eighteen years in the Presbyterian Church in the villages of Hector and Burdett in Hector Twp., Schuyler Co., NY. The McCreery's were pioneers in a newly developing country and were loved and respected by all who knew them
The resting place of Alexander and Eunice McCreery is in Strader Cemetery, a privately owned parcel of land consisting of approximately eight tenths of one acre. This property was purchased from the owner by the McCreery Clan and is maintained today...
