SAMUEL N. COPLEY 1877-1955 Services Held Sunday For Retired Merchant, Prominent Citizen Sam N. Copley, 78, well known citizen of this city, died at his home Friday, October 14, 1955, following an illness of five months. Born in Martin County July 27, 1877, he was the son of the late Allan and Mary Newberry Copley. Moving to Paintsville around 1910, he became associated in the mercantile business with the late John Preston and Dan Ward, operating for a number of years a popular business known as Copley, Ward and Preston. The three retired as merchants in 1933. Mr. Copley worked for several years as a bookkeeper at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio and later was employed as clerk at both the Howard Hotel and the Hotel Herald of this city. His genial disposition and quite mannerisms gained for him a host of friends. He was married December 25, 19?7, to the former Miss Marcia Preston, who survives. He is also survived by three sons, James T. Copley, City, Clarence Copley, Auxier and Robert Copley of Bakersfield, California; one brother, A. B. Copley, Inez and one sister, Mrs. Nora Kirk, Charleston, W. Va. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the First Methodist Church with the Reverend W. F. Pettus officiating. Burial was made in the Preston cemetery under the direction of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home. Paintsville Herald 10-19-1955
