River Victim at West Van Lear Companion Rescued by Johnny Price, 14-year-old Youth Martha Carol Bayes, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Bayes, drowned in the Big Sandy River near her home at West Van Lear. A companion, Helen Caudill, was rescued by Johnny Price, who was hoeing corn on the river bank and hearing the girls’ screams, swam to the scene. The Caudill girl, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lunda Caudill of West Van Lear, was rescued as she rose to the surface of the water. The tragedy occurred about 5:00 p.m. It was reported that neither of the girls could swim and they were wading in the water when they stepped into deeper water and were pulled under by the current. The river was dragged by local residents and the body was recovered about 1 1/12 hours after the incident. More than an hours was spent in an effort to revive the victim, it was stated. This is the first drowning accident reported in the county this year. Surviving, besides the parents, are two sisters, Loretta and Peggy Ann, both at home. Funeral services will be held at the Missionary Baptist Church in West Van Lear, Saturday, June 26, at 2 p.m. Burial will be made in the Hager Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home.
