PAUL VENELL VANHOOSE
1945
Pfc. Paul Venell Van Hoose, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hurshell
VanHoose, Nippa, was killed in action on Okinawa on June 10,
1945.
He was inducted into the army on Sept. 26, 1944, receiving his
training in infantry at Camp Walters, Texas. After a short
furlough at home, he was processed for overseas duty at Fort
Ord, Calif. On Saipan he was assigned to the famous 96th
Infantry Division, going to the Marianas then to Okinawa where
he fought in one of the bitterest campaigns of the Pacific.
Paul attended school at Nippa and Oil Springs High School
where he was admired by friends and classmates because he
always saw the brighter side of life and took what came
without complaint.
He was the oldest of a family of five boys and four girls. He
is also survived by his parents who received the tragic news
of his death on July 9, 1945. A tragedy such as this not only
brings the war to our shores but in our homes where the price
of Victory is not merely a war bond but pain, sorrow and
death.
Pfc. VanHoose was the grandson of Rev. and Mrs. Millard
VanHoose, Nippa, and Mr. and Mrs. Julius Daniels of River.
He was buried with full military honors in a military cemetery
in Okinawa.
