Rites held at the Mayo Science Building marked a community tribute
for Cliff Hughes, 46, who died last month after a long illness.
Born at Thealka, the son of William H. and Maude Preston Hughes,
he had been a resident of Paintsville since 1936. His family had
been residing at West Van Lear for the past six months.
A member of the United Baptist Church, Clifford Hughes had been a
city councilman, and was an electrician and plumber by trade.
He was also a member of Masonic Lodge F. and AM No. 381. The
lodge held graveside rites at the Sloan Cemetery in Winifred.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Sloan Hughes; three sons,
George, Robert and Eddie, all at home; one daughter, Mrs. Ann
Tramel, of West Van Lear; and two grandchildren.
Also surviving are five brothers, Remus, Howard, Henry and Norman
of Paintsville and Richard, of Detroit, plus three sisters, Mrs.
Alice Walker, Dayton; Mrs. Vencil Pelphrey, Paintsville, and Mrs.
Ruth Kazlik of Cleveland.
Officiating ministers were F. F. Rigsby, Everett Sloan and George
Adkins.
Pallbearers were J. T. Newman, Lee Howard, Jr., R. Hayslett, Sammy
Castle, Jr., Jack Meade and Paul Ratliffe.
Honorary pallbearers included William Stapleton, O. T. Dorton,
James K. Williams, Wilbur Daniels, Robert M. Conley, Deward Kazee,
Paul Fyffe and Luther Safriet.
Also Rev. David Ross, W. E. Garland, George Wolfford, Arnold
Wells, Ashland Wallen, Frank Davis, Eugene Crigger, Scott Jarrell,
Jim Johnson, Edwin Jones, Leslie Music.
