DORA CONLEY 1878–1958 Mrs. Dora Meade Conley, 79, a member of one of Johnson County’s most prominent families, died suddenly at 9:30 A.M. Thursday, January 30, 1958, at her home on Drake’s Fork of Laurel Creek near Flat Gap. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Zina Davis Meade of this county and was the widow of Ben F. Conley, well-known school teacher, who passed away in 1932. She was born on October 20, 1878, and had been a resident of Flat Gap for the past 57 years where she reared eleven surviving children. She became a member of the Regular Baptist Church 50 years ago, and she followed the teachings of Jesus, setting an example in her community for her strength of character and fine womanhood. Surviving are four sons; Herschel Conley of Red Bush, Ray Conley, Guidance Counselor of Johnson County Schools, Conrad Conley, a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Georgia, and Byron Conley, Flat Gap; seven daughters, Mrs. Lexie Dixon and Mrs. Anna Jewel Beculheimer, both of Paintsville, Mrs. Fern Lyons, Martha, KY., Mrs. Hazel Johnson, Elliottsville, KY., Mrs. Ruth McKenzie, Volga, Mrs. Myrtle Fairchild, Oil Springs and Mrs. Florence Meade, South Portsmouth, KY.; and three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Elizabeth Butcher, Thealka, Mrs. Vina Riley, Huntington, W.Va., Mrs. May Best, Williamsport, and Dr. Joe D. Meade, Inez. Mrs. Conley was the sister of the late Dr. Lloyd Meade, Paintsville dentist. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 1, at the Flat Gap Enterprise Baptist Church with the Rev. Emerson Collier and Rev. J. W. Beculheimer officiating. Music was by the Toms Creek Singers. Burial was made in the family cemetery at Flat Gap. PAINTSVILLE HERALD Wednesday February 5, 1958
