Mrs. Jewell Yates, 62, of Oil Springs, mother of Oil Springs
basketball Coach Howard "Rusty" Yates, was killed in an automobile
accident Friday afternoon south of Catlettsburg.
Mrs. Yates was fatally injured at 1:25 p.m. when the car in which
she was riding careened off U.S. 23 nine miles south of
Catlettsburg near the Valley Poultry Co. She died of a broken
neck and other internal injuries. Two Paintsville women, sisters
of Mrs. Yates, were severely injured. They were Mrs. Beulah C.
Moore, wife of Price Moore, District Forester and Mrs. Mabel C.
Wheeler. Mrs. Moore, driver of the car, suffered head and back
injuries, and Mrs. Wheeler an injury to her right leg. It is
reported the car crossed the center lines, left the two lane
highway on the wrong side, and overturned. Mrs. Yates was found
more than 30 feet from the car.
Mrs. Yates was a daughter of the late Lindsey and Mary Coldiron
Meade, and was born in Johnson County, November 12, 1902. She was
a member of the Methodist Church.
She was married to Chat Yates of Oil Springs who preceded her in
death.
Surviving besides her son, Howard Yates of Oil Springs, are four
daughters, Mrs. Douglas Stapleton Fuget; Mrs. Wendell Rayes, Oil
Springs; Mrs. Max Wheethee, Greensboro, N.C. and Mrs. Billy Ray
Adkins, Dayton, Ohio. Other survivors are four sisters, Mrs.
Wheeler, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Ora Schroeder, Huntington, W.Va., Mrs.
Hager White, Prestonsburg, an four brothers,Ray Meade and Guy
Meade both of Prestonsburg, and Bill Meade and Bob Meade, Cocoa,
Florida.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 15, at the
Oil Springs Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Meece.
Pallbearers were William White, Robert White, Jack Meade, David
Meade, Leon Meade, Ronald Clark and Junior Hazelett.
Burial was in the Litteral Cemetery.
