1938-2003 Hobart L. (Hobe) Van Hoose, 65, died quietly Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at his home in Flatwoods, Ky., surrounded by his family, after an eight-month bout with cancer. He was born on Jan. 3, 1938, in Johnson County, Ky., a son of the late Perry C. and Helen Preston Van Hoose. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Lynn Van Hoose and his sister, Kathleen Van Hoose Hall. Hobe is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janet Sue Holbrook Van Hoose; two daughters, Kimberly Van Hoose Dillon and her husband, Jeff Dillon, of Flatwoods and Carolyn Sue Van Hoose Grenkoski and her husband, Dr. Mark Grenkoski of Jefferson City, Tenn.; and four grandsons, Derek Allen Dillon, Michael Preston Dillon, Jon Alexander Koella and Bradley Mark Grenkoski, whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by two aunts, Junealla Lyons Arrowood and Anna Ruth Wheeler, both of Paintsville, Ky.; two sisters-in- law, Kathleen Blanton of Staffordsville, Ky., and Eva Lee Lindsey of Zanesville, Ohio; three nephews, David Wheeler of Paintsville, Ray Blanton of Staffordsville, Ky., and Marion Brown Jr. of Zanesville; three nieces, Donna Wheeler of Paintsville, Phyllis Gay Shotts of Springfield, Ohio, and Kay Castle of Sitka, Ky., along with many cousins and a host of friends who will sadly miss him. Hobe joined Tom's Creek Freewill Baptist Church on June 10, 1956, and rededicated his life to the Lord in February. At the time of his death, Hobe was serving as Constable of District 5, Greenup, Ky., as well as owner and operator of Bluegrass Terminals, Bluegrass Automotive and Bluegrass Construction. During his 65 years on this earth, Hobe had many achievements to his credit and was honored on many occasions. The list includes graduation from Oil Springs High School on May 8, 1957, then attending Morehead State University from 1957 to 1961, while on Aug. 15, 1961, joining the U.S. Army, where he graduated from Criminal Investigation and Military Police school in Fort Gordon, Ga. He served as criminal investigator in Frankfurt, Germany, where he was awarded outstanding performance. His presentation of duty was exceptional notwithstanding the fact that the Frankfurt area was one of the most difficult areas in Germany for Criminal Investigative duties. He remained with the U.S. Army Reserve after returning to the United States. He was a graduate of the Kentucky State Police Academy and worked in Boyd, Greenup, Carter, and Lawrence counties. On July 14, 1970, he received the Citation of Bravery from the Commonwealth of Kentucky for service in the line of duty. He was a graduate of Heavy Equipment Operators/Maintenance School, was a member of the Emergency Disaster and Assistance Corp., International Union of Operating Engineers Local 181, and Greenup County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, served as president of the Greenup County Fair and Park Board, served as president of the Eastern Kentucky Arabian Horse Association, commissioned a Kentucky colonel, was past member of Flatwoods Lions Club and in August, 2003, was awarded the Greenup County Citizen of the Month for the years of service to the Greenup County Fair and Park Board. In June 2003, he was given the distinct honor of receiving the National Law Enforcement citation Marital Order of the Purple Heart of the United States of America, in recognition for resolute action and wounds received in the performance of duties on April 2, 1967, during the pursuit and apprehension of an armed criminal. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Tom's Creek Freewill Baptist Church in Nippa, Ky. by the Rev. James Kelly Caudill. Burial will be in Bascom Van Hoose Cemetery in Nippa. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, Sept. 25, 2003, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods and for two hours prior to the funeral service at the church.
