MARY THOMPSON 1893-1961 Funeral services were conducted at 2:44 p.m., Tuesday at the First Christian Church for Mrs. Mary Iuka Thompson, prominent businesswoman of this city, who died in a local hospital at 9:30 p.m., May 14, a victim of cancer. A native of this county, she was the daughter of Isom and Mary Preston Daniel, well- known residents of River.She had lived in this city most of her life. Mrs. Thompson was recognized as one of the city's leading businesswomen, starting her successful career as a restaurant owner and operator in 1942. She owned and operated a number of restaurants at different locations in the city during the years. Her last business venture was the Iuka Market in Stafford Addition which she was forced to sell because of ill health. After her retirement she made her home with her nephew, George Branham, and Mrs. Branham. Her success in business could be attributed in part to her warm and friendly personality which reflected her radiant joy of living and let others share her gift of gaiety and laughter. The beautiful floral offerings were eloquent tributes to the affection in which she was held by her countless friends and acquaintances. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Grateful Sisters Lodge No. 917, Ashland. Surviving besides her nephew are two sisters, Mrs. Jack Cline, Inez; Mrs. C.F. Mann, River; two brothers, Cort Daniel, River; Lafe Daniel, Russell. Services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. John Pommert, and burial was in the Daniel Cemetery at River.
