JAMES MACK HOWARD
1934-1965

James Mack Howard, 31, of Flat Gap, was fatally injured Tuesday when he
was struck by utility poles which he was working on Middle Creek, in
Floyd County. Howard was a lineman apprerentice for the Big Sandy Rural
Electric Cooperative of Paintsville. He was assisting Berlin Griffith,
Job supervisor, at the time of the accident. He had released a strap
holding the poles on a truck when they shifted and rolled onto him,
killing him instantly. Company officials expressed regrets over the
incident and said that the fatality was the first in over seven years for
Big Sandy RECC. The company's safety record is quite good, they said with
regular safety training sessions held each month.

Howard was a member of a prominent Johnson County family. He was a former
teacher in Johnson County schools. He had attended Ashland Junior College
and Morehead State College. He was a member of the United Baptist Church.

Howard was the son of Mrs. Merzie Lemaster Howard of Springfield, Ohio,
and the late Steve Howard. He was born February 10, 1934.

Other survivors are his wife, Mrs. Gerlene Howard, a son, Phillip, and
two daughters, Melinda Karen and Myra Lynn. He has five brothers; Joe
Howard, Washington, D.C., Douglas Howard, West Liberty, Harold Howard,
Fairborn, Ohio, Holley Howard Jamestown, Ohio, and Paul Howard, West Van
Lear; and three sisters, Mrs. Lennie Williams of Ashland, Mrs. Cynthia
Van Hoose of South Vienna, Ohio, and Mrs. Ocie Burchett of Win.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 27,a th the
Coal Springs Church at Elna by Lonza Reed, Tommie Bailey, Melvin Wright
and Kaiser Crace.

Burial will be in the family cemetery on Cantrell's Creek.

Howard Rites are held March 27

Funeral services were held for Mack Howard, age 31, at the Cold Springs
United Baptist Church, Elna, of which he was a member, on March 27,
services were conducted by the Revs. Lonza Reed, Tommy Bailey, Melvin
Wright and Kaiser Crace.

He is survived by his wife Gerlene Lemaster Howard; one son James
Phillip; two daughters, Melinda Karen, Myra Lynn, his mother, Merzie
Howard, five brothers, three sisters and a host of relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were members of Big Sandy RECC where he was employed.
