EDNA E. HAGER
1891-1956
Miss Edna E. Hager, 64, former newspaper woman, and the only woman
ever to serve on the Paintsville City Council, died in a Lexington
hospital Monday, January 2, from pneumonia. She had been in ill
health for about three years.
She was elected as a member of the city council in 1941 and served in
this post until 1944. She spent several years on the staff of the
Paintsville Herald when this newspaper was owned and edited by the
late Charlie Kirk. Her interest in the civic life of this community,
where she was loved and respected by all who knew her, led her many
times into public positions.
Her last work was for the government on a local rationing board
during World War II.
Miss Hager was the daughter of the late Dan M. and Jane Melvin Hager,
and was a member of a widely-known and prominent family. She was
born March 4, 1891 and had lived in Paintsville all her life until
her late illness. She was a member of the First Methodist Church.
Surviving are one brother, Russell Hager, local druggist of this
city, and one half-sister, Mrs. Virgie Geiger, also of this city.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 this morning at the chapel of the
Preston Funeral Home by the Reverend W. F. Pettus.
Burial was made in the Town Cemetery under the direction of the
Preston Funeral Home.
