JOHN KING BUTCHER
1886-1965

J.K. Butcher, 77, retired Paintsville merchant and businessman,
was found dead about 1:00 p.m. Saturday in his room at the Webb
Hotel on Main Street. It is believed he had succumbed to a heart
attack several hours before.

Mr. Butcher, who had been living on his farm in the Fish Trap
vicinity for several years, had recently moved to the hotel.

He had formerly served as a member of the board at Mayo Methodist
Church, and at the Mayo college. He was one of two in the first
graduating class at the old Mayo Seminary which later became Mayo
State Vocational School.

Mr. Butcher was the son of the late Henry Morgan and Agnes
Lawrence Butcher, and was born in Johnson County, July 22, 1886.

He was a member of Mayo Methodist Church, Paintsville Lodge 381 F
& AM and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Surviving are two sons, John K. Butcher, Jr. of Louisville and
L.K. Butcher, Paintsville, three daughters, Dr. Alpharetta Archer
of Painstville, Rosella Gamboe, Paintsville, Linda Prater, Van
Lear, one brother, Beecher Butcher, Williamsport, and two sisters,
Ella Van Hoose, Ulysses, Ky and Edna Ward, Williamsport.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. January 12, at Old
Friendship United Baptist Church by Nim Sturgill, Glen Arrowood,
and Flem Arrowood.

Paintsville Lodge 381 F & Am conducted gravesite rites. Burial was
in the Butcher family cemetery in Williamsport.
