JOEL HENRY BALDWIN
Joel H. Baldwin Of Oil Springs Passes Thursday Joel H. Baldwin, 83, a member of one of Johnson County's largest and best-known families died in a local hospital at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, March 21 1957 following an illness of several days.
The son of the late S. A. and Hannah Davis Baldwin, he was born in this county November 2, 1873. A lifelong resident of Oil Springs, he was a prominent farmer of that section and also worked as a blacksmith prior to his retirement. He was a member of the United Baptist Church. One daughter, Mrs. Ora Rice, preceded him in death. Surviving are his widow, Sarah Fairchild Baldwin, to whom he had been married for fifty-nine years, and eight children. Three sons, Shelby M., Galloway, Ohio, Sherman D., Oil Springs, Joel H., Volga; five daughters, Mrs. Tolbert McKenzie and Mrs. Trigg McKenzie, both of Elna, Mrs. Dord Bayes, Mt. Sterling, Ohio, Mrs. Ottis Holbrook, West Liberty, and Mrs. Ralph Burchett, Fuget. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Wince, Dock, John, Luther and Clint all of Oil Springs, McKinley of this city, Mrs. Eunice Webb, Mrs. Nora Webb, and Susan Baldwin, all of Oil Springs. He also leaves 36 grandchildren and 29 great- grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 Sunday, March 24, from the Bethel United Baptist Church at Flat Gap with Lonza Reed, Foster Rigsby and Tommie Bailey as officiating ministers. Burial was in the Patty Flat Cemetery at Elna under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.
