SANFORD ADAMS
1896-1966

Rites were held at Flat Gap yesterday for two Johnson County
brothers, Sanford and Mark Adams, who died Saturday after a
two-car head-on collision near Flat Gap. Two Morgan County
youths, Harold Wright, 17, and Richard Keaton, 16, also died
in the accident. Trooper Delmer Ison called it "one of the
worst accidents in Johnson County in recent years."

The Adams brothers were traveling east toward Paintsville on
Route 172, and the Wright car was heading west. Trooper Ison
said his investigation indicated that the Wright car passed
another vehicle where there was a slight rise in the road,
and apparently never saw the oncoming Adams car until the
two met head-on. Wright and Keaton were pulled from their
car, which was burning, by Arthur Ealey, an employee of
Paintsville Grocery, who lives nearby the scene of the
accident. Wright was dead, and the Keaton youth died
Saturday evening in Paintsville Hospital.

Sanford Adams was also killed instantly, and his brother was
pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Both Sanford,
70, and Mark, 56, were sons of the late John Elliott and
Rachel Anna Gilliam Adams.

Sanford was born December 8, 1896, and his brother on
February 6, 1910. Both lived at Fuget.

The Adams’s are survived by two brothers, Thurman, Paris,
and Fred, Greenup; and four sisters, Mrs. Versie Jenkins,
Columbus, Mrs. Clovie Fairchild, Thurman, Ohio, Mrs. Stella
Lemaster and Mrs. Levena Patrick, Paintsville.

Mark Adams also is survived by his wife, the former Nora
Cantrell; two sons, James, Barnetts Creek, and Willard,
Fuget; and six daughters, Mrs. Christine Austin,
Paintsville, Mrs. Pauline Jaynes, Nippa, Mrs. Edna C.
Spradlin, Columbus, Lynda, Esta and Lestia, all of Fuget.

Joint services were held Tuesday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at
the Bethel United Baptist Church in Flat Gap, with Lonza and
Arnold Reed officiating.

Burial was in the Adams family cemetery at Fuget.

The Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
