Retired real estate broker, Pearl Conley Baldridge, 93, died Friday,
April 13, in Mountain Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Baldridge was born
December 20, the daughter of Martin and Nancy Jane Spradlin Conley. She
was a self-employed real estate broker in Tucson, Arizona and a member
of the East Point Church of Christ. Surviving are one brother, Luther
J. Conley, of Leander; one sissister, Juanita Ramey, of Paintsville,
one grandson, Eddie Shuppe; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Monday, April 16, in Jones-Preston Funeral Home

Arbie Blair, 84, died Monday, April 2, in Pikeville Methodist Hospital.
Mr. Blair was born March 1,1906 in Magoffin County, the son of Acie and
Pina Blair. He retired from the city of Paintsville where he worked
with the city water and gas utilities company. Surviving are several
nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 5, in
Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Levi Cantrell officiating. Burial was

Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for John C.
Burke, 61. Mr. Burke was born August 9, 1928 in Johnson County, the son
of Carl and Edna Welch Burke. He was employed by Kinnear Corp in
Columbus, Ohio and was a veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his
wife, Virginia Preston Burke; one son, Charles C. Burke, of Columbus:
two daughters, Matilda Mickey and Dianna Burke, both of Columbus; three
brothers, Sam and Bill, both of Hager Hill, and Morris, of East Point;
one sister, Ira Runyon, of Florida; and three grand children. Funeral
services were held Tuesday, April 10, in Paintsville Funeral Home
Chapel, with Rev. Mathew Boyles officiating. Burial was in Highland

Reva Hazelett Castle, 77, died Monday, April 2, in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Mrs. Castle was born January 1, 1913 in Magoffin County, the daughter
of Thomas and Hannah Collinsworth Hazelett. Surviving are her husband,
Frank Castle; one daughter, Ruby Jewell Patton, of Ypsilanti; five
brothers, Clyde and Thomas Hazelett Jr., both of Hager Hill, James
Walker Hazelett, of Presionsburg,and Johnniec and Sam Hazelett, both of
Ypsilanti; seven sisters, Ruth Centers and Eva Estep, both of
Paintsville, Mattie Wright and Julia Swartz, both of Datona Beach,
Florida, Fannie Ehrman, of Shelby, Ohio, Katherine Cantrell, of Mineral
City, Ohio, and Sarah Ann Hazelett of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and two
grandchildren four great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Friday, April 6, in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with C. C. Hall
officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Flat Gap resident, Stella Esta Caudill, 76, died Wednesday, April 18,
at her home. Mrs. Caudill was born August 20, 1913 in Johnson
County, the daughter of P. V. and Effie Price Williams. She was a
retired post master. She was preceded in death by her husband, Estill
Caudill, in 1972. Surviving are one son, Roger Caudill, of Flat Gap;
one daughter, Betty Jo LeMaster, of Portsmouth, Ohio; one brother,
Homer Williams of Louisa; two sisters, Ruby Maloy, of Waverly, Ohio,
and Alka Boggs, of London, Ohio; and four grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturdy, April 21, in Preston
Funeral Home Chapel, with Harold Salyer officiating. Burial was in

Lillie Dixon, 96, died Monday, April 3, in Paul B. Hall Regional
Medical Center. Mrs. Dixon was born February 9, 1894 in Johnson County,
the daughter of John Milton and Mary Etta Woods Conley. She was a
member of the First Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Rolla Dixon, in 1970. Surviving are one son, Garland
Dixon, of Paintsville; two daughters, Dorothy Schroyer, of Paintsville,
and Anna Belle Danies, of Allegan, Michigan; two brothers, Ralph
Conley, of Staffordsville, and W.E. (Deak) Conley, of Allegan; and
three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will
be held today, Wednesday, April 25, at 2 p.m., in Jones- Preston
Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Charles Milam Jr. officiating. Burial

GOBLE, Carlos
1912-1990
Carlos Goble, 77, of West Van Lear, died Tuesday, April 3, at Highlands
Regional Medical Center. Mr. Goble was born September 17, 1912, in
Fleming County, the son of Andrew Jackson and Hessie Mae Goble.
He was a businessman for many years in Paintsville and was a member of
the West Van Lear Church of Christ, serving at various times as church
treasurer, Sunday School superintendent, teacher, deacon and elder.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine Conley Goble; two sons, Dr. Kenneth
Carlos Goble of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Larry Keith Goble of Gainesville,
Florida; and three grandchildren, Allison, Jason and Stacey. Funeral
services were held Thursday, April 5, in Jones-Preston Funeral Home,
with Dave Flannery and Jeff Stanley officiating. Burial was in Highland

Ercel Hall, 75, died Sunday, April 8, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Mr. Hall was born December 3, 1914 in America falls, Idaho, the son of
John and Katherine Carver Hall. He was a member of the Springs Worship
Center and the D.A.V. North Central Chapter #14. Surviving are his
wife, Nellie Faye Tackett Hall; five sons, Richard, Ray, Ronnie and
Donnie Hall, all of Colorado Springs, and Rex Hall, of Illinois; one
daughter, Ercelene Hanson, of Colorado Springs; one brother, Charles
Hall, of Texas; and two sisters, Angelene Wile, of Springfield, Ohio,
and Margie, of Marion, Ohio. Funeral services were held friday, April
13, in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Dick VanHoose
officiating. Burial was in Conley Family Cemetery at Flat Gap.

Victoria Hall, 76, died Monday, April 9, in Rockville, Maryland. Mrs.
Hall was born in Lamar, South Carolina, the daughter of J.G. and Mary
Elizabeth Norton. She was preceded in death by her husband,
George W. Hall, of Van Lear. During the time she lived in Van Lear
(l930 through the early 1970s), Hall played piano for the silent movies
at the old Van Lear theatre, and for many churches and revivals in the
Paintsville area. Surviving are one son, Douglas Hall, of Fairfax
Station, Virginia; one daughter, Georgia Ganas, of Rockville; and three
grandchildren. Services were under the direction of Chambers Funeral

HARRIS, Ruie

Ruie Harris, 82, of Ashland, died Thursday, April 5, in King's
Daughters' Medical Center. Mrs. Harris was born October 5, 1907 in
Johnson Counyt, the daughter of the late John B. and Ellen Lemaster
Harris. She was a former teacher in the Johnson County school system
and was a retired employee of Greer-Ellison Coal Co. She was a member
of the Wise Baptist Church, where she was Sunday school teacher and
church treasurer. Surviving are three sisters, Kathryn Hamilton and
Dorothy Pack, both of Ashland, and Nettie Ellison, of Wise,
Virginia. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 8, in Miller
Funeral Home, Ashland, with Dr. Charles L. Milam officiating. Burial

Helen Hill, 68, died Thursday, April 12, in Paul B. Hall Regional
Medical Center. Mrs. Hill was born September 19, 1921 in Johnson
County, the daughter of Taylor and Lula Collins. She was a member of
Van Lear Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Alvin
Hill; two sons, Astor Hill, of Van Lear, and Roger Hill, of Thelma; six
daughters, Avis Jean Montgomery of Wittensville, Shirley Ann Griffith
and Susan Faye Hill, both of Van Lear, Lucille Daniel, of Urbana,
Indiana, Erma Sue Castle, of Burnsharbor, Indiana and Sandra Kay May,
of Lexington; two brothers; Floyd and Otton Collins, both of Van Lear;
two sisters, Imogene Murphy, of Van Lear, and Mary Edith Fields, of
Weeksbury; and 16 grandchildren and 11 great-gandchildren. Funeral
services were held Saturday, April 14, in Jones-Preston Funeral Home

Former Johnson County resident, Eunice Blair Hyden, 74, died Saturday,
April 14, in Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, Indiana. Mrs. Hyden was
born October 2, 1915 in Paintsville, the daughter of Oscar and Louise
May Blair. A Wabash resident for 27 years, she retired from Data
Vue. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Johns Creek.
Surviving are her husband, Sam Hyden; one son, William Roger Hyden, of
Wabash; one daughter, Phyllis Ann McCarty of Kansas City, Missouri; two
brothers, Becher Blair, of Lagro, Indiana, and Marshall Blair, of Van
Lear; three sisters, Annie Murphy, of Van Lear, Mary Baldridge, of East
Point, and Myrtle Wheatley, of Paintsville; and six grandchildren and
six great grandchildren. Services were held Monday, April 16, at
Eddingfield-DeLaughter Mortuary, with Rev. Billy Fields officiating.

85. Mrs. LeMaster was born January 31, 1905 in Lawrence County, the
daughter of Henry and Eliza Bishop Ramey. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Vassie LeMaster, in 1962. Surviving are two sisters,
Georgia Pack, of Stambaugh, and Pauline Hackney, of Ashland. Funeral

26, in Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mr. Mollett was born April 4,
1908 in Ohio, the son of Cora Mollett. He was a self-employed merchant
and member of Little Friendship United Baptist Church. Surviving are
his wife, Nellie Ward Mollett; one daughter and son- n-law, Marlene and
Marcus Wells of Tomahawk; three half-brothers, Clyde Lewis of
Pennsylvania, and Walter and Frankie Lewis, both of Boons Camp; four
half-sisters, Rose Daniel, of Williamsport, Mae Pyle, of Boons Camp,
and Ethel and Ruth Bowling, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one

Lewis Murphy Jr., 62, died Tuesday, April 17, at his Washington
Courthouse, Ohio residence. Mr. Murphy was born February 26, 1928 in
Floyd County, the son of Lewis Sr. and Pearl Bentley Murphy. He was a
retired Air Force Master Sergeant. He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Hermalee Osborne Murphy, in 1983. Surviving are his wife,
Gladys Webb Murphy; one stepson, Charles Hayner, of Washington
Courthouse; one stepdaughter, Cynthia Anderson, of Washington
Courthouse three brothers, Leon and T. J. Murphy, both of Wayland, and

Machinist Larry Dean Nickell, 45, died Tuesday, April 3, at his home.
Mr. Nickell was born November 28, 1944 in COlumbus, Ohio, the son of
James Robert Nickell and Neva Chamberlin Nickell Lanning. He ws
employed by Island Creek Coal Company. Surviving are his mother; his
wife, Carolyn Burkett Nickell; one son, James Nickell, of Ulysses; one
daughter, Melissa Carol Nickell, of Ulysses; two brothers James, of
Volga, and Stephen, of Cynthiana; and two sisters, Shirley Jean Tussey,

Prater, 90. Mrs. Prater was born March 30, 1910 in Johnson County, the
daughter of George and Laura Dixon McKenzie. she was a member of
Fishtrap United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Wardie Prater, in 1983. Surviving are four sons, James, John,
George and William Prater, all Volga; four daughters, Neva Lee
McKenzie, of Volga, Avanell Finley, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Anna
Mary Holbrook, of Pleasureville, and Ernestine LeMaster, of North
Lewisburg, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Zella Ramey, 86, died Friday, April 27, in Norworth Care Center,
Columbus, Ohio. Mrs. Ramey was born September 21, 1903 in Johnson
County, the daughter of Columbus and Minnie Salyer. She was retired
from Ohio University where she worked in the Food Service Deparmtent.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fairy Ramey, in 1980.
Surviving are two brothers, Miltie Salyer, of Sitka, and Norman Salyer,
of Columbus; and one sister, Cova McKenzie, of Sitka. Funeral services
were held Tuesday, May 1, in Cannons Chapel Volga, with Fred Ramey
officiating. Burial was in Ramey Family Cemetery at Volga with

Woodrow Salyer, 73, died Sunday, April 29, in Doctor's Hospital,
Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Salyer was born February 15, 1917 in Johnson
County, the son of Ross and Grace Lemaster Salyer. He was a truck
driver and member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Margaret Blanton Salyer, in 1980. Surviving are one
son, Mike Salyer, of Brownstown, Indiana; three sisters, Evelyn
Pennington, of Jackson, Ohio, and Mary Jo Pairagin and Opal Anderson,
both of Columbus; and one grandson. Funeral services will be held

"Duke" Stidham, 19. Mr. Stidham was born October 15, 1970 in Urbana,
Ohio, the son of James Jr. and Anna Castle Stidham. He was employed as
a dietician with Champaign Nursing Home in Urbana. Surviving are his
parents; and one sister, Heather Stidham. His grandfather, the late
Clinton Castle, was born in Paintsville in 1928. Funeral services were

Former Johnson County resident, Addie Van Hoose, 71, of Ashley, Ohio,
died Wednesday, April 11, at Grady Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Van Hoose
was born June 1, 1918 in Johnson County. She was a nurses aide, retired
from the Delaware County Home, and a member of Edison Enterprise
Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Van
Hoose. Surviving are three sons, Ronnie and Gary, both of Ashley, and
Rick, of Olathe, Kansas; three daughters,Ruella Castle, Ida Christeen
Franklin and Joan Gale Fisher, all of Ashley; five brothers, Tom,
Holly, and James Van Hoose, all of Tutor Key, Clyde, of Lewis Center,
Ohio, and Ralph Van Hoose of Oil Springs; one sister, Tilda Ann Adams,
of Warton, West Virginia; and 14 grandchildren and five

Stambaugh resident, W.T. "Brother" Williams, 84, died Wednesday, April
11, in Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mr. Williams was born March
2, 1906 in Johnson County, the son of Tommie and Lockie Witten
Williams. He was a miner and farmer and was a deputy sheriff for 10
years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fanna Grimm Williams, in
1988. Surviving are three sons, William, of Glouchester, Virginia, and
Charles and Hobert, both of Baltimore, Maryland; three daughters,
Sharon Lynn Meade, of Paintsville, Billie Phyllis Fitzpatrick, of
Baltimore, and Laura Lou Blair, of Waverly, Ohio; three sisters, Sarah
Estep, Lori Baldwin and Louise "Shug" Samas, all of Baltimore; 13

Van Lear resident, Patricia Ann Witten, 33, died Monday, April 9, Ms.
Witten was born February 1957, in Michigan, the daugher of Gale Douglas
and Ellaween Hannah Witten. She was employed by Heart O' Highland
Motel. Surviving are her mother; three brothers, Steve and Charles
Witten, both of Warren, Michigan, and Freddy Witten, of Brighten,
Michigan, six sisters, Linda Rostron, of Hazel Park, Michigan, Brenda
Hering and Kimberly Penix, both of Van Lear, Betty Walters, of Madison
Heights, Michigan, Francis Witten, of Detroit, Michigan, and Dyrene
Adkins, of Warren; three stepchildren; and 24 nieces and nephews and a
great niece and nephew. Funeral services wll be held tomorrow,
Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m., in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel,
