BLEVINS,
John Jr.

John Blevins, Jr. died suddenly on April 10 in his Paintsville home.
The 63-year-old native Johnson Countian was the son of the late John E.
and Flora Mae McKenzie Blevins. Survivors include two sons in Columbus,
Ohio, Bruce and Norman Blevins; two daughters, Bonita B. Woods of
Columbus and Josephine Coffee in Westland, Mich., and two brothers from
Paintsville, Russell and Arnold Blevins. Also surviving are seven
sisters, Mary Brooks and Sue Lively of Sitka; Gypsie Goble and Florence
Baldridge of West Van Lear, June Davis from Catlettsburg, Birdie Blair
in Hager Hill, and Mae Maynard of Huntington, W. Va., and 17
grandchildren. Claude Preston officiated at services held April 13 in
the chapel of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home, which cared for interment
afterward in the Persimmon Point Cemetery at Staffordsville.

BUTCHER, Glenn
1971
Glenn (Beaner) Butcher, a 64-year-old retired coal operator and
Paintsville resident, died April 26, 1971, in a Paintsville hospital.
He was born in Williamsport to the late John and Rachael Phelps Butcher
and was married to Mae White Conley Butcher, who survives him. Other
survivors include two sons, Glen R. Butcher of Tutor Key and Eugene
Butcher of Pikeville; a brother in Miamisburg, Ohio, William Butcher;
two sisters, Grace Marcum of Williamsport and Maxie Shelly of
Chattanooga, Tenn., and six grandchildren. Charles Milam conducted
services April 29 in the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home, which
arranged for interment afterward in the Highland Memorial Park at
Staffordsville. Pallbearers were Harry Thomas Jr., Thomas Hazelett,
Brugh, Tom King, Charles Spradlin and Jay Burchett.
CAUDILL, Frank

Frank Caudill, 92, passed away April 9 in the Staffordsville home of
his son, Leonard Caudill. The retired farmer and former Swamp Branch
resident was born in Johnson County to the late William and Mary Scalf
Caudill. His wife, Rose Rice Caudill, died in 1962. Immediate survivors
include four sons, Roy Caudill of Riceville, Homer Caudill of
Pierceton, Ind., Bruce Caudill in Indianapolis Ind., and Leonard
Caudill at Staffordsville; four daughters, Mrs. Sherman (Margie) Rice
of Swamp Branch, Mrs. Virgil (Martha) Hackworth in Riceville, Mrs.
Claude (Gladys) Rice of Troy, Ohio and Mrs. Payne (Mildred) Picklesimer
of Dayton, Ohio. Also surviving are a brother in Disco, Ind., A.M.
Caudill; two sisters, Mrs. Cynthia Howard of Garrett and Mrs. Lizzie
Hackworth in Bonanza; 44 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren.
Services were held April 12 in the Long Fork United Baptist Church at
Riceville, with Buell Ferguson, Lonza Reed and O.I. Williams
officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery at Riceville, under
the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Jerry,
Larry, Emery, Delbert and Kenrick Caudill, Charles Picklesimer and

Elders Everett Slone and O. J. Williams held services April 14 in the
chapel of the Paintsville Funeral Home for Mrs. Lola Caudill, 77, of
Paintsville. Mrs. Caudill died April 11 in a local hospital after a
long period of declining health. She was born in Franks Creek to the
late Henry R. and Manda Castle Lemaster and was married to Watson G.
Caudill, who passed away in 1949. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs.
Lawrence Daniel of Paintsville, Mrs. Jasper Slone of Winifred and Mrs.
Dewey McClure of Wittensville. Interment was in the Ashland Cemetery at
Ashland, with the Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of all

CRIDER, Bobby E.

Bobby Eugene Crider, 33, of Staffordsville died suddenly on April 14.
He was self-employed and the son of James and Katherine Stapley Crider.
Survivors include his parents; five brothers, Richard
Crider of Paintsville, and Doug, Johnnie, Chalres, and Tommy Crider of
Staf- fordsville; three sisters, Sue Cantrell and Sheila Crider of
Staffordsville and Phyllis Burchett of Stambaugh. The Revs. Alfred
Frazier, Jr. and John F. Ratliff held services April 17 in the Free
Will Baptist Church of Staf- fordsville. Burial followed in the church
cemetery, under the guidance of the Paintsville Funeral Home.

Martha W. Dials, 66, of Paintsville passed away April 28, in a local
hospital after suffering a brief illness. She was born in Elliott
County to the late Martin and Louvina Hay Watson and was married to Von
Dials, who survives. Other survivors include four sons, Wayne Dials of
Paintsville, Dewayne and Jimmy Dials from Hazard, and Maynard Dials
from Mason, Ohio; three daughters, Wanda Hamilton of Cincinnati, Ohio,
Donna Dials from Paintsville and Dorrie Osborne of Loveland, Ohio; two
brothers, Frank Watson of Plummers Landing and Logan Watson of Litton,
and two sisters, Rebecca Dials of Hillsboro and Mary Bayes of Sandy
Hook. Scott Castle and Charles Stapleton held services May 1 in the
First Freewill Baptist church of Paintsville, which she was affiliated
with. The Jones-Preston Funeral Home took charge of burial

Leo Elgin, 81, died April 14 near his Detroit, Mich., home. Services
for the native Italian were held April 19 in the chapel of the Jones-
Preston Funeral Home, with H. B. Daniel presiding. Interment was in the
Conley Cemetery at Sitka, under the direction of the Jones Preston

EVANS, Gusta (Evans)

Gusta Evans, a 55-year-old lifetime resident of Keaton died April 16 in
a Louisa hospital after a long period of declining health. He was born
to Warren and Rissie Kelly Evans and was married to Juanita Franklin
Evans, who survives him. Other survivors include three brothers,
Proctor Evans of Keaton, Oscar Evans of Columbus, Ohio, and Homer Evans
in Martha; and two sisters, Veata Sparks of Grayson and Goldie Skaggs
in Keaton. John Pelphrey, Buell Webb and Hager Kelly conducted services
April 18 in the Point Pleasant Church at Barn Rock. The Preston

GULLETT, Charles A.
1971
Master Sgt. Charles Albert Gullett, 59, died April 24 in a Lexington
hospital after suffering a brief illness. The 26-year U.S. Army
Veteran was manager of central duplicating at the University of
Kentucky. He was born in Paintsville to the late Sherman and
Irene Bush Gullett and was a member of Paintsville Masonic Lodge No.
381, F & AM. Gullett lived in Lexington for the last 16
years. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Stapleton Gullett,
and three brothers, Andrew J. Gullett of Lexington, robert F. Gullett
of South Shore, Ohio, and Paul R. Gullett of Canton, Ohio.
Graveside rites were conducted April 27 by the Paintsville chapter of
Disabled American Veterans, with Elmer Wiley officiating. Burial
followed in the Stapleton Cemetery at Winifred, under the direction of

HAZELETT, Thomas Sr.
1971
Services were held Sunday, May 2, (1971), in the First Freewill Baptist
Church for Thomas Hazelett, Sr., 84, of Paintsville. He died
April 29, (1971) after a brief illness. A retired farmer and teamster,
he was born in Magoffin County (Kentucky) to the late John and Arhelial
McFarland Hazelett. His first wife, Hannah Hazelett died in 1967.
Survivors include his second wife, Alka Robinson Helton Hazelett, and
five sons, Johnnie and Sammie Hazelett of Ypsilanti, Mich., James
Hazelett of Prestonsburg, and Clyde and Thomas, Jr. of Paintsville.
Also surviving are eight daughters, Mrs. Frank Castle and Mrs. Sam
Centers of Paintsville, Mrs. Roy Wright and Mrs. Taulbe Farley of
Ypsilanti, Mich., Mrs. Walter Cantrell of Mineral City, Ohio, Mrs. Onis
Slone of Shelby, Ohio, Mrs. George Estep of Lexington, and
Mrs. Gerald Swartz from Daytona Beach, Fla., and one brother in
Paintsville, Warrick Hazelett. Scott Castle and Claude Preston
officiated at the funeral, and the Jones-Preston Funeral Home arranged

HINKLE, Robert L.

Robert L. (Bob) Hinkle, Sr., a 68-year-old retired civil engineer, died
suddenly on April 3, in his Paintsville home. He was a member of the
Church of Christ and was affiliated with Paintsville Masonic Lodge No.
381, F & AM, and Paintsville Chapter 131, RAM. Hinkle was born in
Davey, W. Va., to the late Elza and Lynnie Farmer Hinkle. Survivors
include his wife, Edris Price Hinkle; three sons, Robert L. (Bob)
Hinkle, Jr. of Paintsville, William L. Hinkle of Lexington and James R.
Hinkle of Reno, Nev., a daughter in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mrs Donna Jo
Ramsey, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were
held by Buell Ferguson, Homer Preston and Luther Preston on April 6, in
the Chapel Of the Preston Funeral Home, which arranged for burial
afterwards in the Roscoe Davis Cemetery at Davis Branch. The

HITCHCOCK, Abbie (Brown)

Services were held April 29 in the Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel for
Mrs. Abbie Hitchcock, 94, of Milford Center, Ohio. The Floyd County
native passed away April 26 in a Marysville, Ohio hospital after being
ill for one week. She was the daughter of the late Larkin and Elizabeth
Lewis Brown and was married to Caleb Hitchcock, who preceded him in
death in 1951. Survivors include a son in Milford Center, Taulba
Hitchcock; one daughter, Mrs. Fannie Picklesimer of Irwin, Ohio; a
sister in Van Lear, Mrs. Lona Moore; 21 grandchildren; 44 great
grandchildren and several great, great grandchildren. The Rev. W. D.
Jaggers officiated at the funeral. Interment followed in the family
cemetery at Volga, with the Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of all

Levi Johnson, a retired farmer and lifelong Thelma resident, died in
his home on April 9 after three years of declining health. He was born
to the late Charlie and Nora Price Johnson and was married to Leona
Daniels Johnson, who survives him. Other survivors include a son in
Paintsville,. Alvin (Bud) Johnson, and six grandchildren. Buell

Thelma Community Center, The Preston Funeral Home arranged for burial

Services were held April 10 in the Wells Chapel of Boons Camp for Julia
Meek Jones, 78, of West Van Lear. The daughter of the late Jake
and Mary Jane Fields died on April 7. Survivors include her
husband, Elmer Jones; two sons from Dayton, Ohio, Roma and Herbert
Meek; six daughters, Ethel Preston, vina McLaughlin, Beatrice Brown and
Bernice Smith of Dayton, Ohio, Mildred Ring in Lake Wood, Calif., and
Marjorie Barker of Norwood, Ohio. Also surviving are a brother in
Boons Camp, H.D. Wells; two sisters, Louise Harmon of Williamsport and
Ethel Pack from Toledo, Ohio; 21 grandchildren and four great
grandchildren. Frank Spillman officiated at the funeral, and the
Preston Funeral Home supervised interment afterward in the Meek

Williamson R. (Bill) Meek, 76, of River died April 13 in a Louisa
hospital after a long period of worsening health. He was born to the
late William B. and Linda Dutton Meek and was a member of the Freewill
Baptist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Rosa Smith of
Bidwell, Ohio and Mrs. Cynthia Williamson of River. Services were held
April 15 in the home of a nephew, Saul Williamson. Burial was in

MINER, Exer (Robinson)

Mrs. Kenneth Lassing Miner, the former Exer Robinson, passed away on
April 1 in her Albany, N.Y., home. She had lived in Paintsville
most of her life, where she was employed by the Paintsville National
Bank. Later she was assistant Dean of Women at Morehead State College.
Mrs. Miner served overseas with American Red Cross during World War
II. In 1946 she married Kenneth L. Miner and moved to Albany.
Survivors include her husband; one sister in Knoxville, Tenn., Mrs.
Paul Record, and a host of relatives and friends. Interment was in the
Lassing family cemetery, Poughkeepsie, New York. Paintsville Herald

MOLLETTE, Elias
1971
Elias Mollette, a retired miner and former Van Lear resident, passed
away April 23 in a local rest home. He was 71. Mollette was born
in Johnson County to the late Joseph and Lizzie Crum Mollette.
Immediate survivors include a son in Milain, Mich., Marion Mollette;
four daughters, Mrs. Audrey Hanshaw and Mrs. Rose May Germany of
Ypsilanti, Mich., Mrs. Dimple Meek of Van Lear, and Mrs. Alice
Williamson in Cincinnati, Ohio. Also surviving are a half brother from
Louisa, Jack Bowens; two half sisters, Katherine Wells of Van Lear and
Louvisa Reed of Hippo and 11 grandchildren. The Rev. Hershel Short
conducted services April 25 in the Van Lear Church of Christ, of which
Mollette was a member. The Paintsville Funeral Home cared for

Marion Lee Montgomery, 67, died in his Columbus, Ohio, home on April 27
after a long period of declining health. He was born in Morgan County
to the late Jim and Lizzie Keaton Montgomery. Surviving are six sons,
Ben, Mack, Wilbur, and Jim Montgomery of Willard, Ohio, and Jessie and
Dempsey Montgomery in Columbus; one daughter, Elizabeth Spears of
Columbus; seven brothers, Willie, Obrie, Frank and Ben Montgomery of
Paintsville, Henry Montgomery of Flat Gap, Harold Montgomery of Van

Willie R. (Bill) Murphy, 61, died April 19 in a Whitesburg hospital
after a long period of declining health. The retired miner was born in
Johnson County to the late Henry & Julia Meadows Murphy. Survivors
include seven daughters, Mrs. Wilma Franklin of Lorain, Ohio, Mrs.
Peggy Mangan, and Mrs. Loretta, Betty, Reba, Wilene and Elizabeth
Murphy, all of Cleveland, Ohio; a brother in Nippa, Dewey Murphy; three
sisters, Thelma Frith of Van Lear, Susie Ward and Tillie Murphy of
Wittensville. Claude Preston and Scott Castle officiated at services
held April 22 in the chapel of the Jones-Preston Funeral home , which

Earlie Music, 68 of West Van Lear passed away April 30 1971 in a local
nursing home after suffering an extended illness. He was born in Van
Lear to the late William & Maggie Butcher Music. Surviving include
two sons, Donald Music and Curtis Music, of Wabash, Ind; two brothers
Willie Music of La Fontaine Ind, and Lindsey Music from Clearwater,
Fla; two sisters, Mrs Elava Meek and Mrs Malvorie Smith of West Van
Lear; and one grandchild. Bill Tackett, Charles Ray Banks and Paris
Sasco conducted services May 3 in the Van Lear Freewill Baptist Church.
Burial followed in the Webb Cemetery at Van Lear, under the direction
of the Preston Funeral Home.

Casaundra Lynn Pack, the infant daughter of James A. and Nancy Lynn
Wells Pack, Died April 17 at Lackland Airforce Base, Texas. She was
born April 1 at Anchorage, Alaska. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. James R. Wells, and paternal grandparents are James Pack and Betty
Tackett. Services were held by the Rev. Charles Milam on April 21 in
the chapel of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home, which arranged for

James Brady Stephen Rose, the two-month-old son of Stephen Gail and
Phyllis Akers Rose, died April 6 in his Van Lear home. He is survived
by his parents; a sister at home, Tina Gail Rose; paternal grandparents
Brady and Vineda Rose of Van Lear, and maternal grandparents Denver and
Lorene Akers, also of Van Lear. Services were held April 8 in the West
Van Lear Church of Christ, with Cecil Sherman officiating. Burial

Mary Francis Salyers, 72, died April 15 in her Lowmansville home. She
was born in Johnson County to the late Zack and Manda Sparks Salyers
and was married to Patton Salyers, who passed away in 1959. Survivors
include two sons in Lowmansville, Vencil and Arzie Salyers; two
daughters, Mrs. Julette Greene of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Loretta
Blevins in Barnetts Creek; two brothers, Tommy Sparks of Kerz and Sammy
Sparks from Staffordsville, and Alice Blevins, a sister in Volga.
Services were held in the home on April 18, with Lonza Reed
officiating. Burial followed in the Estep Cemetery, under the

James Nelson Sparks, 54, died April 25 in his West Van Lear home after
suffering an extended illness. He was a retired miner and a
member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Sparks was born in
Johnson County to the late Richard and Rose Walters Sparks.
Immediate survivors include his wife, Ruth Spradlin Sparks; two sons at
home, James and John Sparks, three daughters at home, Elizabeth, Cindy
and Peggy Sparks, and a daughter from Prestonsburg, Cathy Hughes; two
brothers, Ottis and Green Sparks of Pontiac, Mich., and three

Estil Thacker, 64, passed away April 3 in his Southville, Mich., home
after an extended illness. The retired Ansco Airlines worker was born
in Pike County to the late Richard and Pricey Robinson Thacker. He is
survived by his wife, Ruby Ratliff Thacker; one daughter in Detroit
Mich., Peggy Ann Paffenroth; four brothers, Harlan, Paris, Troy and
Buster Thacker, and three sisters, Mrs. Lona Fleming, Mrs. Elizabeth
Kinney and Mrs. Fern Kinney. Norman Brown and Monroe Jones held
services April 6 in the chapel of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home, which

Staffordsville for Nancy Ferguson Trimble, 44, of West Van Lear. She
was born in Johnson County to the late Dan and Rosa Castle McKenzie and
was married to Robert G. Trimble, who survives. Paul E. Ferguson,
her first husband, passed away in 1964. Other survivors include a son
in Van Lear, Paul E. Ferguson, Jr.; one granddaughter, Tracy Mae
Ferguson; four brothers, James A. McKenzie of Paintsville, Daniel
McKenzie of Gaylord, Mich.; Doug McKenzie and Olief McKenzie of
Thealka, and two sisters, Mrs. Erva Beacher of Paintsville, and Mrs.
Irma Carothers in Dayton, Ohio. Elders Nim Sturgill, Florida Lyons and

Steven Douglas VanHoose, 12, of Xenia, Ohio, died April 15 after a long
illness. He was born in Johnson County to Willie D. VanHoose and Betty
Pelphrey Brakeall. Survivors include his parents; two sisters and a
brother in Xenia, Fannie Brakeall and Charles and Nelda VanHoose; his
maternal grandmother, Beatrice Pelphrey of Xenia, and his maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Gene VanHoose of Logan, Ohio.

Christ, with Cline Salyers officiating. Burial followed in the Highland

Services were held April 18 in the Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel for
Henry Vanover, 78, of Thealka. He died April 16 in a local
hospital. The retired mechanic and former Free Will Baptist was born in
Letcher County to the late McClellan and Nancy Hall Vanover. He
was a member of the Salyersville Masonic Lodge. The Rev. Scott Castle
and C. C. Hall officiated at the funeral, and the Paintsville Funeral
Home took charge of burial arrangements in the Highland memorial Park
at Staffordsville. Pallbearers were John Burton, Joe D. Castle, Everett
S. Bradley, William F. Castle, Michael D. Lyons and Johnny M. Bunyard.
Survivors include his wife, Dora Tacket Vanover; four daughters, Mrs.
Joe Castle of Pikeville, Mrs. Everett Bradley of Van Lear, Mrs. Martin
Lyons of Paintsville, and Mrs. Bert Grimm in West Van Lear; two
sisters, Mrs. Jose Tacket of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Mrs. Cora Reed of

Howard Wiley, 54, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away April 4 in a hospital
near his home. The former funeral home attendant and member of the
Christian Church was ill for nine days prior to his death. He was born
in Lackey to the late Merida (Bud) and Carrie Stapleton Wiley.
Immediate survivors include his wife, Lillie Pelphrey Wiley; a son in
Paintsville, William Michael Wiley; four daughters, Francis Jarrell of
Toledo, Carrie Cinnamond of Pikeville, Mary Pack of Georgetown, and
Judy Wiley in Paintsville; three brothers, Lanceford Wiley of
Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Clarence Wiley of Ocala, Fla., and Ola Wiley from
Paintsville. Also surviving are five sisters, Effie Copley of Van Lear,
Dorothy Mullins in Newport News, Va.; Piney Beadles of Maryland, Bessie
Adkins of Paintsville, and Madge Jennings in Phoenix, Ariz., and three
grandchildren. Services were held April 7 in Paintsville’s First
Christian Church, with Jerry Ginnan presiding. Burial followed in the
Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, with the Preston Funeral Home
in charge. Pallbearers were Mike Wiley, Jr.; Freddy Barr, Jack Crigger,

James K. “Polk” Williams, 63, of Oil Springs died April 19 in a
Huntington, W.Va., hospital. He was a former state highway department
worker and the son of the late Theodore and Bertie Williams. Survivors
include his wife, Josephine Webb Williams; a son in Oil Springs, Arnold
Williams; two daughters, Mrs. Bill Blanton of Oil Springs and Mrs.
Howard Sparks in Paintsville; three brothers, Charlie Williams of
Xenia, Ohio; Ben Williams in Ashland, and Lewis Williams of Oil
Springs; four sisters, Miss Jose M. Williams and Mrs. Addie Blair of
Oil Springs, Mrs. Virginia Patrick of Ashland, and Mrs. Norcie
Stapleton of Hager Hill, as well as six grandchildren. Funeral services
were held April 21 in the home, with Elders Prater Blair and Lonza Reed
presiding. The Paintsville Funeral Home arranged for burial

Spicy Wilson 66,passed away in her Boons Camp home on April 28,
1971after two years of declining health. She was the wife of Thomas
Wilson who survives her, and the daughter of the late Smith Reese and
Nanny Nicely Reese. Immediate survivors include her husband, a daughter
in Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Netty Mulkey; two sisters; Oma Adkins of
Shelbyanna, and Alive Arbgast of Baltimore, Md; 53 grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren. Claude Preston conducted services May 1 in
the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home, which arranged for burial
afterward in the Spicy Wilson Cemetery at Boons Camp. Paintsville
