EDNA FRAIL
1891-1962

Mrs. Edna Gates Frail, 70, wife of J. H. Frail, prominent merchant of
this city, died Sunday, July 1, at 1:20 p.m., in a local hospital after
an extended illness.

Mrs. Frail was born in Ashland October 21, 1891, the daughter of the
late George and Ethel O’Reiley Gates.

She and Mr. Frail were married June 4, 1914 in Cincinnati, OH, and
following their marriage made their home in West Virginia for several
years. The Frails moved to this city in May 1924 when Mr. Frail was sent
here as the manager of the Standard, Hume and Hadden Store. In 1936, he
and Mrs. Frail established Frail’s, which became one of the leading
clothing stores in the valley. Mrs. Frail served as vice president of
the firm and as buyer for the ladies ready-to-wear department of the
store. She was an active participant in the operation of the store from
its establishment until a few years ago when she was forced to retire
because of ill health. Mrs. Frail had been a member of the First
Methodist Church of this city for 38 years and was a regular attendant
at the church services. She was active in the Women’s Societies of the
church and was always particularly interested in the Sunday School
class. She was a leader in the organization of the girls’ 4-H Club in
the county and also acted as supervisor. She retained her interest in
this project throughout her life and assisted in the development of the
program.

Mrs. Frail was stricken with cancer about 16 years ago and had undergone
nine major operations. Her constant and untiring struggle against this
illness made her life a symbol of courage and attested the noble
qualities of her indomitable spirit.

Survivors include besides her husband, a son, James Howard Frail, Jr.,
Orlando, FL; three daughters, Mrs. K. B. Williams of this city; Mrs.
James Armstrong, Pulaski, FL; Mrs. Earl Gambill, Daytona Beach, FL.

Also surviving are two brothers and one sister of Cincinnati, OH; seven
grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. today at the First Methodist
Church with the Rev. Robert Hart, pastor officiating.

Burial was in Highland Memorial Park.
