Pierce Mothershead Family Ties
Samson Stewart Wiley was born ca 1804, though where he was born is in some dispute. According to family sources Samson was born in South Carolina, but census records from 1850-1880 list his place of birth as North Carolina. In any case, the Wiley family moved from the Carolinas ca 1811 and lived first in the area of New Madrid MO then to Jefferson County MO, where Samson lived until his death on December 8, 1897. Samson married his first wife, Hannah Bess on June 10, 1832 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri [source: Marriage Book A for Cape Girardeau County MO] and brought her back to his home in Jefferson County.
According to a "house" history given by Fred Long to the De Soto newspaper the Jefferson Republic and published in the March 23, 1967 edition, Samson had at least two brothers, George and Eli who also lived in the area.
Samson is not listed on the 1830 Jefferson County MO Census (only heads of households were enumerated), but he is shown on the 1840 Jefferson County MO Census, Big River Township with his family. The Census listing shows one male in the 30-40 age range, one female in the 20-30 year old catergory, 1 female aged 5-10, one female younger than 5 and two males age 5 or younger. Living in close proximity to Samson and his family in Big River Township are John Wiley Sr., Whitaker Mothershead, Martha Mothershead, Milton Baker and David Wiley.
