The following information is from "Goodspeeds History of Jefferson, Franklin, Washington Counties Missouri":
In the Franklin County chapter:
- p. 226 - 227: "Prairie Township was occupied about 1820 by American settlers, among them the following: Thomas Boyd...Richard Pierce...Patrick Napier..."
[my note: Thomas Pierce married Kesziah Napper - possibly spelled Napier, of Jefferson Co., MO, on 10 Oct 1839 -jm]
- p.279: Jeremiah Pierce served in January 1857 as a juror in a murder trial that was heard in Franklin County on a change of venue from Warren County.
- p. 351: "Little Meramec Missionary Baptist Church was organized in the fall of 1849, by the Rev. Simeon B. Lewis, with seven members: Simeon B. Lewis, Barbara Lewis, Mrs. Sabert Hoff, Abraham Lemons and Joseph Riley and wife. The first church building was a log one erected about 1855; it was 20x30 feet in size, and cost about $100. The same building is still being used, but a twenty-foot addition has been made to it. Its location is in Section 10, Township 41, Range 2 east. Rev. Simeon Lewis dedicated this first building soon after its completion. The various pastors have been Rev. Simeon Lewis, Rev. James Williams, Rev. William McKay, Rev. Marion Pierce, Rev. "Hut" Hensley and the Rev. Mr. Frazier. The Rev. William McKay is the present pastor, and the membership of the church is about seventy-five."
[my note: The Rev. Simeon B. Lewis, pastor of Little Meramec Baptist Church married my great-grandfather, George W. Pierce to his first wife, Susannah Lemons, on 6 Jan 1850. They had five children before Susannah passed away circa 1858-1859. Rev. Simeon B. Lewis, pastor of Little Meramec Baptist Church, also married Nathaniel Pierce and Mary Lewis on 27 Apr 1851; George Washington Lemons and Elizabeth Brown on 16 Feb 1854; David Pierce and Elizabeth Hopkins on 28 Feb 1854; and Arvin Skaggs and Rody Pierce on 13 Aug 1856.
- p. 351 (cont) "Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1885, by the Rev. Marion Pierce. The original membership was twenty-one, who withdrew from Little Meramec Church: John DIckinson and wife, W.P. Lewis, Jr. and wife, W.P. Lewis, Sr. and wife, Wyatt Arnold and wife and son, Lydia Lewis, Stewart Taylor and wife, Rebecca J. Taylor, Amelia Lewis, Ella Lewis and others. The church building was soon afterward completed for worship. The pastors have been Revs. Marion Pierce, Mr. Short and Rev. William McKay, present pastor. The present membership is about sixty.
[my note: I do find it a litle unusual that Rev. William McKay is listed as the current pastor of both the Little Meramec and the Oak Grove Churches. Did he travel back and forth between them both? -jm]In the Jefferson County chapter:
- p. 454: "The Sandy Creek Baptist Church was organized by Rev. Thomas Donahue about the year 1835, with James Frazier and wife, John Herrington..." ... "The Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church was organized about the year 1840. Reuben Pounds and H. Lea were the deacons; they and their wives...and others were constituent members. About the same time a log church was erected, and about 1860 a frame church was erected in place of the old one at a cost of $800. This church is located near Big River, in the western part of the county. Its pastors have been James Williams, Washington Stephens, William McKay, N.M. Pierce, W.H. Hensley and Price McKay. Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church was organized in the forties with James Williams, Silas Belew and wife and other constituent members. Its church edifice, being a frame building, was erected in 1848; it is situated on Dry Creek. With one or two exceptions its pastors have been the same as those of Bethlehem. Its membership is 105."
In the Washington County chapter:
- p. 500:"On December 18, 1855, Thomas Fillibrown shot and killed Richard Pierce. He (Fillibrown) was tried on the 2nd of May, following, found guilty of murder in the second degree, and sentenced to serve twelve years in the penitentiary. ... In 1863 Richard Marshall killed Moses Baker, in Johnson Township."
