Pierce Mothershead Family Ties

Elusive Lucy's

The name "Lucy" was popular with the Mothershead and Long families... and the most popular thing for the Lucy's to do is to be extremely mysterious :) I don't know where they come from, nor where they go. We only have a glimpse of one here, a trace of another one there. After having spent several years trying to learn more about them with little success, I decided to post what I do know about each of them here in hopes someone else might be able to make a connection (If you do, please email!). I'm sure I'll be adding other "mystery" ancestors as time passes, but for now we're starting with Lucy.

  1. Lucy (Mothershead) Martin We have a reasonable amount of information about a portion of this Lucy's life after she married Willis F. Martin, but where did she come from? The bio on her son, Whitaker A. Martin (link will open in a new window) tells us she was born in Kentucky, but I've not been able to determine who her parents were or any siblings. Also, if Whitaker was one of seven children, what about his brothers and sisters? When did Willis F. Martin die, when did Lucy die? Where was she living after 1830 (can not find her or her husband after 1830, though obviously she was still living after 1880 when the article was written. So many questions! If you have any answers (and yes, more questions are welcome too :), please email!

  2. Lucy Ann Mothershead This Lucy is on the 1870 Federal Census for Moreland Township, Scott County MO. Her age is given as 60, so she's born ca1810, in Kentucky. There are two young adults with her: Stephen D. Martin, age 28, and Susan J. Martin, age 23; both born in Missouri. Is this the same Lucy (Mothershead) Martin mentioned above?

  3. Lucy Mothershead This one I believe is the widow of John Jett Mothershead. She's on the 1820 Davidson County TN Federal Census; she's in the "Female, Over 45" category. Also in the houeshold is another female "10-16" and two males; one "16-18" years of age and the other "16-26". In 1815 an Inventory of the Estate of John Jett Mothershead was filed in the Davidson County TN court by Lucy Mothershead, Administrator. I believe this is the same Lucy as above. Unfortunately I can find no mention of her after the 1820 Census.

  4. Lucy Long married William Mothershead 11 March 1788 in Culpepper Co, VA. William died ca1828 in Jefferson County, MO and Lucy passed away before him. No information at all on her parents, though William had an enduring relationship with several Long family members.
