The family name Van Bebber has been derived from "Bedburg", a village near Cleve (Germany). For that reason you see on the top of the Van Bebber coat of arms the name "a Bedbur".

The Van Bibber family that was the first to settle in the New World was the family of Isaacs Jacob Van Bibber who came to Philadelphia in 1687. He came to America to prepare the way for his parents and the rest of the family that would soon follow. The Van Bibbers were residents of Krefeld (now Germany) and had been persecuted in Europe because they were followers of Menno Simons. Other Mennonites from Krefeld had come to Philadelphia in 1684 at the invitation of William Penn including Herman op den Graff, who was the husband of two of the sisters of Isaacs Jacob. Isaacs Jacob Van Bibber moved to Germantown (now a suburb of Philadelphia) and was engaged in commerce.
It was not long before the rest of the family immigrated to Germantown and resided there and in Philadelphia until moving to Cecil County Maryland. While in Germantown the family got involved in a religious dispute and perhaps that is what caused the migration to Maryland.

In 1704, Isaac moved his family to Bohemia Manor, Baltimore County (now Cecil County), Maryland on the north bank of the Bohemia River (this empties into the Elk River, which flows into Chesapeake Bay) because of spiritual unrest.
There they became part of the Labadist community, which was the first Protestant mystic community in America. This religion was similar to the Quaker religion and was known for its severe discipline and punishments.
Members could not use fire for warmth, had to eat bad-tasting food, confess sins to an open assembly, and have no luxuries. As punishment, clothes were taken away. Some men sat at different tables during meals, not speaking to anyone. Men and women ate at different tables and slept in different rooms. All property was held as common stock of the community.

His home was the first Mennonite meeting place, in 1690, and he was listed as a church member May 23, 1708. Moved to Bohemia Manor, Cecil Co., Md., in 1704. Naturalized in Md. As Isaac VanBiber, Gent." Of Cecil Co., Merchant, 1701/1702, for which he paid 3 pounds, 6 shillings, 8 pence to the speaker, 1 pound, 10 pence to the Attorney General, and 1 pound, 10 pence to the Clerk. Will made Sept. 14, 1723, proven, Nov. 25, 1723, "Aged about 62 years."

Historical Overview
Menno Simons (ca 1496-1561) was a Dutch religious reformer. In 1536 he left the Roman Catholic priesthood because of his disagreement of infant baptism and other Catholic teachings. He organized and led the less aggressive division of Anabaptists in Germany and Holland. The name Mennonites is derived from his name, although he did not actually found the sect.
Anabaptists was the name given to certain Christian sects who believed that infant baptism is not authorized in Scripture, and that baptism should be administered only to believers. Prominent in Europe during the 16th century they were persecuted everywhere. Their chief leaders were Thomas Münzer and John of Leiden. Mennonites and Hutterites are descended from them.
The Mennonites were a Protestant sect which arose from Swiss Anabaptists. They were also called Swiss Brethren. The group seceded in 1523 from the state church in Zürich Switzerland after rejecting its authority and infant baptism. They believed in nonresistance, refused to take oaths, and held the Bible as their sole rule of faith. Their distinctive beliefs were embodied in the Dordrecht Confession of Faith (1632). Mennonites have two sacraments, baptism (for adults only) and the Lord's Supper. The sect spread to Russia, France, and Holland. In America Mennonites first settled in 1683 at Germantown, PA. One of the most conservative divisions of the Mennonite Church is the Amish Church, which, under Jacob Ammann broke away in the late 17th century from the main body in Europe. The principal U.S. Amish groups are the Old Order Amish, who hold services in German and adhere to traditional customs (wearing plain clothing and shunning modern education and technology), and the Conservative Amish, who hold services in English as well as German and have adopted some innovations.

The Labadists were German Separatists, who took their name from Jean de Labadie, a former Catholic priest. The Labadists came to America and founded several colonies in New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
The community in Maryland, later known as "Bohemia Manor", was established in 1683. It had a maximum membership of 100 and owned nearly 4000 acres of land. The Labadists were religious mystics who hoped to emulate the early Christian Church communism. Their administration was in the hands of a dictator named Peter Sluyter. Soon after his death (in 1722), the community disbanded and the members melted into the individualistic American scene.
Conrad Weisal , the founder of the Shaker movement, based much of his theology on the Labadist thought. William Penn spent much time with the leaders of the Labadist church in Weisal before becoming a Quaker.
