[1316] Sir Thomas Boleyn, of Hever, Kent, and Blickling, Norfolk, 1st son and heir of Sir William Boleyn, K.B., of Blickling afsd. (d. 1505), by Margaret (d. between 30 Sep. 1539 and 20 Mar. 1539/40), 2nd and younger daughter and coheir of Thomas (Butler), Earl of Ormond [I.] (d. 1515), was born in 1477. With his father he was in arms against the Cornish rebels at Blackheath in June 1497. He was present at the marriage of Prince Arthur to Catherine of Aragon in Nov. 1501, and accompanied Queen Margaret to Scotland in Aug. 1503; he was squire for the body at the funeral of Henry VII, 11 May 1509; K.B. 23 June 1509; Knight of the Body to Henry VIII; Keeper of the Exchange at Calais and of the Foreign Exchange in England, July 1509; a bearer at the funeral of Prince Henry, 27 Feb. 1510/1; joint constable of Norwich Castle, 15 Feb. 1511/2. Sheriff of Kent, 1511-12 and 1517-18. He was Ambassador, with John Young and Sir Richard Wingfield, to the Emperor Maximilian in the Low Countries, May 1512 to June 1513, and, with Sir Edward Poynings, he concluded a treaty with the Pope and Margaret of Savoy at Malines, 5 Apr. 1513, for the Holy League against France. He was a bearer of the canopy at the christening of the Princess Mary, 20 Feb. 1515/6; Carver to Queen Margaret of Scotland, 1517; a signatory of the Treaty of Universal Peace and treaty of marriage between the Princess Mary and the Dauphin, Oct. 1518; P.C. 1518; Ambassador to France, Jan. 1518/9 to Feb. 1519/20. He was appointed to be present at the Field of Cloth of Gold and at the meeting with the Emperor in June and July 1520 respectively; Comptroller of the Household, 1520, and Treasurer thereof, 1522-25; together with the Prior of St. John's he was an envoy from Wolsey to the Emperor, during the Cardinal's "mission of mediation" in 1521. He was present at Windsor, June 1522, at the signing of the Treaty with the Emperor, to whom he was Ambassador, with Dr. Sampson, in Spain Oct. 1522 to May 1523. His acquisition of numerous Stewardships and Keeperships and gradually of high honours marks the progress of the favour which his daughters Mary and Anne, in turn, found in the King's eyes. Nom. K.G. 23 Apr. 1523. On 18 June 1525, at Bridewell, he was created Viscount Rochford. At Notre-Dame, Paris, on 9 June 1527 he was one of the joint commissioners who received the oath of Francis I to the treaty of Alliance of 30 Apr. 1527. He was created, 8 Dec. 1529, Earl of Wiltshire in England in tail male, and Earl of Ormond in Ireland in tail general. He was Keeper of the Privy Seal, Jan. 1529/30 to June 1536; Ambassador to the Pope, the Emperor and the King of France in 1530 in support of the proposed divorce of Queen Catherine. A Commissioner to conclude a closer league of unity with Francis I, 30 Apr. 1533. He was present, 10 Sep. 1533, at the baptism of his granddaughter Princess Elizabeth. He was a Commissioner to Prorogue Parl., 3 Nov. 1533, to try Lord Dacre, 9 July 1534, to tax Rochester and Canterbury, Mar. 1534/5, and to try Sir Thomas More, 1 July 1535. In 1536 all the Irish lands and possessions of the heirs general of Thomas, Earl of Ormond [I.] (d. 1515), as absentees, were confiscated by Act of Parl. [I.]. He married circa 1500, Elizabeth, 1st daughter of Thomas (Howard), 2nd Duke of Norfolk, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir Frederick Tylney, of Askwellthorpe, Norfolk. She died at the Abbot of Reading's place, beside Baynard's Castle, 3, and was buried 7 Apr. 1538, in the Howard aisle in Lambeth Church. Fun. Cert. The Earl died s.p.m.s., 12 Mar. 1538/9, aged 61, at Hever, Kent, and was buried there. Brass, in the insignia of the Garter. On his death the Earldoms of Ormond and Wiltshire and the Viscountcy of Rochford became extinct."
