James Hickerson
I am looking for that one piece of documentation that proves without a doubt, James Hickerson, the father of Virginia Catherine Hickerson Rouse, was the son of Thomas Hickerson and Susannah Van Bibber. From all the information I have it leads me to believe he was. The following is what I have:
My great grandmother, Virginia Catherine Hickerson Rouse, died in 1917. On her death certificate it states her father was James Hickerson and her mother's name was (no first name) Henley.
Thomas Hickerson and Susannah Van Bibber had a son James born about 1828 in Missouri. He is listed on the 1850 census of Montgomery County, Missouri as a 22 year old, living in the home of his parents Thomas and Susannah. In the book "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri," there is an article on Thomas that states, "Thomas moved to Montgomery County in 1818 and settled on the west bank of Loutre creek, near Loutre Lick. He soon after married Susan Van Bibber, daughter of Major Isaac Van Bibber, by whom he had thirteen children -- Melissa, Thomas A., James, Isaac V., Robert L., Alfonzo, and Susan J. the other six children died in infancy."
The Hickerson family was dwelling #461 on the 1850 census of Montgomery County. Dwelling #459 is the family of Lucy J. Henley and her eight children. One daughter listed is Mary, age 13 years. I believe this Mary became the spouse of James because they appear on the 1860 census of Linn County, Missouri. James is listed as being 31 years old while Mary is 23. Listed with them is three children; Virginia - 10, Thomas - 4 and Allen - 3.
In 1870, the family has been fragmented, I'm guessing due to Mary's death, and possibly due to the Civil War. Virginia and Allen were living in Montgomery County. Virginia, age 18, is living in the home of James and Bettie Bragg of Loutre Township. Allen, age 11, is living in the home of Abner Loomis and his wife Rosa of Danville Township. Thomas (Tom), age 14 is living in the home of S. J. Pulliam (female) in Auivre Township, St. Charles County. A search for James on the 1870 census has turned up fruitless.
On the 1880 census, James, now at the age 51 and listed as a widower, shows up living in the home of his son, James H., age 24, in Henry County, Missouri. Virginia married James Henry Rouse in 1874 and they were recorded in Boone County, Missouri. I have no further record of James after the 1880 census.
I have searched for other possible James Hickersons born about 1828 in the state of Missouri and have come up with none. I strongly believe James, the son of Thomas Hickerson and Susannah Van Bibber, was the husband of Mary Henley.
If anyone has any information on James Hickerson or his wife Mary Henley, I would appreciate hearing from you.
