Jemima Boone was born in Yadkin River Country, Rowan County, North Carolina 10 APR 1762. Jemima died 1829 in Missouri, at 67 years of age. She married twice. She married an unknown person in Fort Boonesborough, Kentucky, about 1776. She married Flanders Callaway. Flanders was born in Virginia 1758.

Serena Lamme Howell, a granddaughter of Jemima Boone and Flanders Callaway and the wife of Lewis Howell gives the following account of her grandmother, Jemima Boone Callaway:
"Girls Captivity. - They declined the company of Saml. Henderson and went down in canoe; and returning touched the opposite shore, and holding on to the canoe to rest themselves - and were taken: Girls commenced hallooing, but Indians shook their tomahawks over their heads and hushed them up: Seized them by their hands, and ran through the bushes: Finally came to an old horse, which. the Indians had left - and the younger Callaway girl was getting exhausted, and delicate, and she was placed on the horse - one Indian went before to lead the way, and rest followed with the other two girls. Horse poor and ugly - and finally put the other Callaway girl on, and then horse kicked and reared - and had to give it up - the horse gave out and was abandoned."
"The girls were tied together at night, their arms fastened together, and made fast to saplings (their ankles not fast, as remembered) so they could sleep: Thus spent two nights. Had some dried buffalo tongue - all the food they had."
"When recaptured - Indians had built a fire - girls were all sitting down - but not tied then - nor during day-stops: Now in despair - so far - gave up hope of being retaken: When guns fired; when two Indians seized the girls to drag them into the fire in the apparent hope that their clothes wd. take fire (clothes were cut off short) - Indians. had to desist, as they were both shot or wounded: Old Col. Rhd. Callaway one of the party. Betsy Callaway had her face so scratched by briars that she had to wait several weeks to recover before she was married."
