George Boone and his wife buried in the cemetery at Friends Meeting House, Exeter Township, Berks Co., Pa. No stones in the Quaker cemetery.
Some accounts say that the Boones were Normans whose adventurous nature drove them to the southwest tip of England, beautiful and peaceful Devon, where we find them living in the village of Brandninch, not far from Exeter and the sea. From Devonshire, George Boone III looked westward across the Atlantic toward the New World where his adventurous blood urged him to go. But the blood which coursed more slowly prompted him to send ahead his three oldest children -- George, Squire and Sarah. This was in the early part of the 18th century. Near the end of the same century George Boone's restless grandson was looking westward toward Upper Louisiana, but like his grandfather, Daniel Boone first sent ahead his son Daniel Morgan Boone to investigate the new territory lying west of the great Mississippi.
New lands always enticed the Boones. In his quiet Devonshire village George Boone III, a weaver, finally yielded to the urge of his "itching feet" and, according to some, the persuasions of his friend, William Penn, and on August 17, 1717 with his wife and six children sailed from Bristol, England, across the ocean to a new land. On September 29, 1717 George Boone III, the founder of the Boone family in America, arrived in Philadelphia, but not until 1720 did he settle permanently in Oley Township, now Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
