Obituary:
MR. CLAUDE LEIGH
Mr. Claude Leigh, who began as a rent collector in the East End at the age of 18 and became the president of one of the largest property companies in Britain, died in Jamaica on Sunday, aged 75.
The son of an estate agent, Moss Benjamin Levy, Mr. Leigh was educated at a City foundation school and later at Putney. He had his own business by the time he was 21 and in 1946 he founded the Metropolitan Estate and Property Corporation, of which he became president on his retirement as chairman and managing director in 1961.
Mr. Leigh had many charitable interests. He was treasurer for many years of the Princess Beatrice Hospital in Fulham, and, from 1954 till his death, treasurer of the Royal Albert and Alexandra School. He was a keen and generous supporter of the Joint Palestine Appeal. One of his gifts to Israel was a school and sports centre at Kibbutz Bet Haemek.
He was also a generous supporter of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation, of which he was a prominent member for 54 years. |
