Duggan, David Milwyn
Born in Builth, Radnoreshire County, Wales, May 5, 1879; son of Thomas and
Frances (nee Williams) Duggan. Received public school education. Spent
twelve years (1893-1905) in the dry goods trade. Came to Canada in 1905 to
farm at Nanton, Alberta. Moved to Edmonton in 1912 and established D.M.
Duggan Investments, Ltd., a successful financial firm handling bonds and
investments. Defeated mayor J.A. Clarke in 1920 election and served until
1923. Elected to Alberta Legislature in 1926 as a Conservative. Re-elected
in 1930, 1935, and 1940. Made leader of Alberta Conservative Party in 1929.
Was one of the most popular MLAs. Member of the board of management of the
First Baptist Church; member of Rotary Club, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce,
vice-president of Alberta chapter of the Red Cross. Married Marian Price in
1902. Four children. Died on May 4, 1942 after a protracted illness.
