Pioneer Families of Grand Traverse County, Michigan

The Grand Traverse Herald began publication in 1858 and was printed as a weekly newspaper until 1901. Its pages are filled with genealogical and historical data, much of which is lost in the thousands of pages of text and advertisements. The Grand Traverse Area Genealogical Society has indexed all of the Grand Traverse Herald, as well as many other local newspapers and the indices are available in paper format at Northwestern Michigan College and the Grand Traverse Area District Library. Modern obituaries are also posted at the Record Eagle website.

I am posting transcriptions of  local news articles and/or columns published in the Grand Traverse Herald. The links below will take you to the transcriptions, separated by year or month. To search the month web page for a particular name, go to your browser menu and click on "Edit." Then click on "Find (on This Page)" or hit Ctrl+F. Type in the surname or word you are interested in. Remember to check name variations! (e.g., Greilick/Grielick, Rossman/Rosman, Petitil/Petertyl, etc). I have transcribed all names exactly as written. I hope find your family in one or more of the newspaper articles. Please note- I haven't finished proof-reading the newspaper transcriptions, there are probably a few typographic errors!
