Our surname was identified by the National Archives under the SOUNDEX Code No. J220 which includes; Jacox, Jacock, Jacocks, Jaycock, Jaycox, Jeacock and Jeacockes. Code No. J200 includes Jaycx  and Code No. J222 includes such spellings as Jaycockes, Jacoxes and Jeacockes. Phonetically, the variations always surprise me and I have discovered 89 different spellings thus far. The more commonly found surnames in the United States today; Jaycox, Jacox and Jacocks, are an Americanized version of Jeacockes, an English name. Jaycock another derivation of this name, is mainly found in Canada today while the Jeacock is still most common in England.  Since there are so many spelling variations found, especially in earlier historical documents when people were less literate. It is important to try many spelling variations to find the ancestors you are trying to locate.

Our ancestors arrived in the mid 1600's and can be found in the early town records of Hempstead, New York and Stratford, Connecticut.  Francis Jecockes is listed as one of the earlier settlers of Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. See the list of early settlers at JDevlin's site. The Jecockes can then be found in Hempstead, Long Island, New York as early settlers.  From Long Island, around the time of the Revolutionary War, the families moved upstate New York to Dutchess County, Canada and then westward settling in Illinois and Ohio, Colorado and California.

The majority of Jaycox today are found in New York and Ohio. Most of the persons with the surname Jaycox who died in the years 1959 to 2003; lived in the state of New York (23%) at the time of their death. This is based on the information provided in the Social Security Death Index.  This only includes deaths reported to the Social Security board because they were receiving benefits or applying for death benefits. The remainder of the top ten states where they lived were; Ohio (11%), Missouri (8%), Florida (4%), Illinois (4%), California (4%), Connecticut (4%), Colorado (3%) and New Jersey (3%). Over 70% of the Social Security Numbers for these persons were issued before 1951. At the time the numbers were issued the top ten states where they
lived were slightly different but New York, Ohio and Missouri were still the top three.

Arnie Jeacock of London, England, has spent many years conducting a One Name Study (http://www.one-name.org/) on these Surnames and added 59 different spellings versions that he has found in his research for the United States, England, South Africa, Canada and Germany.  His earliest record dates back to 1397 in the spelling, Jancock.  He claims that there are 481 Jeacock's in various places around the world today.  You can reach him at ArnJeacock@aol.com.
