The Sumpter/Hathaway Family Tree on ancestry.com has this interesting

note: "A man named Curit came to Portland from Guadalupe [a French

Carribean Island] in 1770. He married and settled in Cape Elizabeth. Three

years later, he returned to Guadalupe to settle an estate and never

returned. His widow went to Chebeague island with her 2 children, and when

she died, the islanders raised the children, John and Elizabeth."
