According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage", "In July 1338 he was going

beyond the seas in the King's service, and in 1344 was granted custody

of a manor. In Nov 1348 he was going abroad again on the King's service

with Richard Talbot."

He predeceased his father. He left no male heir - only two daughters,

Joan and Eleanor.

"Five Generations of Descendants of Robert and Elizabeth Mansfield", compiled by Bob Anderson, gives his birth at 8 Sep 1829 and identifies his wife as Elizabeth Stevens, born 1836. However, the 1860 census listed William's age as 26, which would translate to a birth year of about 1834.

The 1860 census for 6th Ward, Bangor, Penobscot Co., Maine:
