Frank chief to make his home in Gaul, or who wore a purple robe and a
crown like a Roman Emporer. He made his principal home at Paris. It
was he who expanded the Frankish kingdoms by his successful prolonged
campaigns against the Thuringians, Alamans, Burgundians, and Visigoths.
Noteworthy to us is the fact that his adversary as king of the Visigoths,
ALARIC II (RIN 2466), is also our ancestor. He also consolidated his
power by killing several rival Frankish kings, some of whom were his
own relatives. He also had SIGEBERT THE LAME, KING OF THE RIPUARIAN
FRANKS (RIN 2506) murdered by his own son CLODERIC. Clovis then had
CLODERIC executed for the parricide and claimed soverignty over his
kingdom (that of the Ripuarian Franks) as well.
Through the influence of his wife, CLOTILDA, he was converted to
Christianity. As was the custom in ancient times, the entire tribe
followed his example.
He had four sons between whom his domains were divided when he died.
The last surviving son, CLOTHAR, consolidated the Frankish domains
under his sole authority.
