From Cokayne's "Complete Peerage", in the article on Richmond, we see

that his older brother, Geoffrey Boterel II inherited the comital lands in

Brittany from their father, STEPHEN. Alain had apparently been groomed

to inherit his father's English possessions. As early as 1123, while his

father was in Brittany, Alain was already in England.

In 1139 an unnamed nephew of his was killed at the court of KING

STEPHEN (RIN 3890) by servants of the Bishops of Salisbury, Lincoln, and

Ely. Alain urged THE KING to reprisals, thus contributing to the fall of

those bishops. In 1140, Alain siezed the castle of Galclint and its

treasure, ejecting WILLIAM D'UBIGNY (RIN 3098) therefrom. This was

the time of the stuggle between STEPHEN and the EMPRESS MATILDA

(RIN 788) over who would rule England. Alain was a partisan of STEPHEN,

so STEPHEN deprived MATILDA's half-brother Reynold de Dunstanville

(RIN 795*) of the Earldom of Cornwall and gave it to Alain. Alain had

some claim to Cornwall through his uncle, Brian. In 1141 Alain fought for

STEPHEN at the critical battle of Lincoln, but did not give a very good

accounting as he was put to flight at the outset by the charge of the

"Disenherited". Later the same year he was taken prisoner by RANULF,

EARL OF CHESTER (RIN 865), who forced him to do homage to MATILDA

and to return the Earldom of Cornwall to Reynold. In 1142 a tournement

between Alain and William, Count of Aumale was stopped by KING

STEPHEN. In 1143 Alain invaded the church of Ripon and insulted

Archbishop William. In 1145 he crossed the channel to Brittany and

never again returned to England. He died in 1146.

Per Galliou and Jones' book, "The Bretons":

This was also a tumultuous time in Brittany. The Duke, CONAN III

(RIN 793) disenherited his son and heir apparent, Hoel. CONAN died in

1148, leaving his daughter (and Alain's widow), BERTHA, who was Alain's

distant cousin as the heiress to the Duchy of Brittany. BERTHA's new

husband, Eudes, Vicompte de Porhoet became Duke of Brittany, jure

uxoris. 1148 to 1156 was a time of civil war in Brittany. KING LOUIS VII

(RIN 1530) tried to bring Brittany under his control by supporting the

disenherited Hoel.
