Farmerie, one of the modern scholars most familiar with medieval
Iberian genealogy, says he was a bastard brother of the same name.
"Todd A. Farmerie"
on 2 Dec 1996 (in part):
Subject: Re: RFC Spanish lines (was Re: Descendants of Don Pelayo?)
"The best name to give the father of RAMIRO SANCHEZ is Sancho Garces
Mazeratiz. Mazeratiz was (it appears) born before his brother, Sancho
IV, King of Navarre, and thus assumed to be a bastard. Mazeratiz
married
twice, first to CONSTANCE SANCHEZ DE MARANON, and second to a sister
(Sancha I think) of Count Gonzalo Salvadorez (again, I think. This is
from
memory)."

Subject: Re: The Sancho sons of Garcia IV
"Sancho Garces Mazeratiz (Basque for 'deformed' or 'one-eyed'). Note
that the identity of Mazeratiz with the son of GS is not proven. The
marriages are those of Mazeratiz, while the descendants are those of the
son of KING GARCIA, but it is extremely likely that the two were one and
the same. Mazeratiz m1) CONSTANZA SANCHEZ, daughter of THE COUNT
OF MARANON, and m2) the sister of Gonzalo Salvadorez. He had isuue by
both wives, but his son RAMIRO was presumably by the first. He is
sometimes made father of Estefania, of the Leonese Fruelaz clan, but I
think it more likely that she was RAMIRO's. He also had a son Sancho
Sanchez, and at least one daughter. His family appears to have been
tied
to Aragon (or probably more precisely the part of Navarre which was
held by Aragon)."
The issue gets a little cloudier with a posting to GEN-MEDIEVAL on 8 Jan
1999, where Farmerie posted that"Salazar recently published a paper
addressing this man. He reached two important conclusions. First,
previous historians have mistakenly combined the identities of two
separate counts. This man, the husband of Constance and father of
Ramiro and Estefania, was distinct from Count Sancho Garces Mazeratiz,
who married a descendant of the earlier Queen Endregota, and was father
of Count Sancho Sanchez. . . ".
