Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (108:25).

Robert inherited Alcenon in Normandy from his father. His brother, Hugh,

inherited the English lands, but when Hugh died without an heir in 1098,

Robert also succeeded to them, becoming Earl of Arundel and

Shrewsbury. All of his English honors and estates were forfeited to the

Crown when he was exiled in 1102.

Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (257:31) identifies her as HUGH DE GOURNAY's

wife. (152:26-27) identifies her as the dau. of ALBERIC and MAUD.

Stuart's "Royalty For Commoners" (82:28-27) identifies her mother as

Joan Basset, but see next note.

Per Evans, in "Genealogy Magazine" (15:53-63, 21:94):

"[Juliane m. Hugh de Gournay]

This last was identified by G. Herbert Fowler, Publications of the

Bedfordshire Historical Society, 19:85. Fowler identified Juliane's

mother as Joan (Basset). This is chronologically unlikely. See notes on

ALBERIC II for more detail on this matter.

My source for her and HUGH as the parents of MILLICENT is the following

bef 1249 to Eva de Braiose, d. July 1255, daughter of William de Braose

and Eva Marshall.

William in turn was the son of William de Cantelou (Cauntelo), of Calne,

Wilts, Lord of Tre-Cantlow (Cantleston), d. 22 Feb 1250/1 at Calne, m. to

Melicent de Gurnay, d. 1260, daughter of Hugh V de Gournay and Juliana

de Dammartin.
